Gulf Coast Oil Fumes

The oil fumes now beginning to engulf the Gulf Coast have the potential to

overwhelm the detox pathways of those breathing in the fumes, a potent brew, an

insidious cocktail of volatile organic solvents, which could potentially unleash

a cascade of destructive oxidative stressors for both humans and animals.

It is not too early to speculate a " Gulf Coast Syndrome " , characterized by

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, along with biochemical markers associated with

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder among those affected

by these fumes.

Some will likely be affected more than others. The sad thing is that no one is

sounding a cautionary alarm for people to wear protective charcoal filter masks,

to stay indoors, a dubious defense, or simply evacuate. With the current state

of evacuation fatigue along the gulf coast, I doubt people will move to cleaner

air, and likely, charcoal masks will soon be in short supply.

There may not be enough time to educate the public of this pending danger.

Martin Pall, PhD., an authority on " volatile organic solvents " lends a credible

understanding to the inherent risks and dangers in this most unfortunate

disaster. Martin Pall's website:
