We live in interesting times...

 

 

 

 

OK, raise your cyber-hands if you haven't heard of the latest publicity

regarding the flu vaccination and serious reactions including one death

in a child under the age of 5. I expect that all of you have your hands

down because this has been front page news both on and off-line for at

least the last week. And though the story changes every day depending on

which politician is doing the back-peddling at the time and what medical

organisation happens to be out there defending vaccination as still

'perfectly safe', the most telling thing to me is that - according to

many forums which have asked for input - the way in which this

vaccination campaign has been handled has forced even pro-vaccination

parents to take a second look at whether or not they can trust what their

doctor is telling them about vaccines.

Below are several links to some major coverage of this issue so if you

haven't been keeping up with it all, you will be able to catch up

quickly. In a nutshell however, here are some of the facts you need to

know about so you can discuss this with your friends and family and also

so, if there is an article in a newspaper you would like to respond to or

a talkback radio program you'd like to call and have a yarn with, you

will have these details to hand and will feel confident about

participating in this debate.

1. In WA, the flu

vaccination campaign was part of a study into the effectiveness of flu

shots in children. This age group has never before been offered shots

against influenza and there are no details to show that they work or are

safe in this group that is already getting many other vaccines so the two

drug companies who make these vaccines have provided funding via the

Telethon Institute to do this study. (In fact, there is a lot of evidence

to show that in children and healthy young adults, the flu vaccine is no

more effective than a placebo)

 

Parents were not

being told that their children were guinea pigs and until the number of

reactions reported at one hospital - PMH - became overwhelmingly obvious,

even to medicos. Most reactions were being ignored.

 

2. In QLD, a 2-year

old girl died hours after getting her flu shot. Channel 10 news reported

on this briefly and the QLD Minister for Health, Paul Lucas issued a

statement on that same news program to say that no one should avoid being

vaccinated because of this death. A bit less than 2 weeks later, when the

number of children being hospitalised in WA was made public, both Paul

Lucas and Jeannette Young, the Chief Health Officer for QLD, said that

they were unaware of this child's death. When advised later that

statements had been made the day she died, they then changed their story

to say they were never 'formally advised' of this death and were unable

to locate either the Mt Gravatt Police department who were doing the

investigation or any other information about this child so they could

start an investigation into her death.

3. The Cochrane

Collaboration's 40-year retrospective study into the effectiveness of

influenza vaccinations found that in children, the vaccine was no more

effective than a placebo. The WA government was advised of this result in

2008 and yet, they still began this vaccination campaign.

4. WA had more

reactions than other Australian states and Territories because they were

participating in this study.

 

Part of that

participation meant that the government was sending letters to parents of

children in the target age group, urging them to get their children

vaccinated with this 'free' shot that would protect them from

influenza.

 

 

Nowhere in this material did it advise parents that their children were

part of a study. Many more parents would have brought their children to

receive an influenza vaccine in WA because of this contact from the

government.

5. The government is

claiming - as is the medical community - that there is no evidence that

the vaccines have caused either the death of this child or any of the

other serious reactions which have led to hospitalisations in WA, QLD,

VIC, NSW and SA (SA is refusing to release any information on how many

reactions have been reported or how many children have been

hospitalised). They claim to be looking into this to see if there is a

connection between the vaccines and the reactions and yet, there is no

test that can determine what has caused a reaction to a drug or a vaccine

and patterns of responses are most often the only evidence a drug company

or government department can rely upon when trying to determine the

safety of a new drug or vaccine.

6. The government has

admitted that the current vaccine - which contains a mixture of 2 human A

type influenza strains and the AH1N1 (swine flu) has never been tested in

children so its effects are unknown. Last year's AH1N1 swine flu vaccine

was tested on less than 400 children and had a very high rate of high

fevers and other systemic reactions.

We will try and keep you informed of any updates to the current situation

and would appreciate your doing the same. If a story appears in your

local paper or on your radio or TV network regarding this issue, please

forward a link to our office. If there is a talkback radio program on

this issue, please feel free to call our office and if it's possible,

Meryl will respond but if you can't reach us (and even if you can),

please call the station and give them your own input - we need lots of

voices to be raised on this issue.

 

For once,

parents who never before questioned these shots are asking why perfectly

healthy children can be vaccinated and die or be hospitalised as a result

of vaccines. Let's see if we can keep the pressure on the government and

the medical community to do real investigations and take real action for

the sake of all our children.

Magazine delayed

 

 

We have to apologise because the last issue of Living Wisdom which should

have been out over 3 weeks ago will most likely be delayed for another

2-3 weeks. There are several reasons why this has occurred. Firstly, our

website was down for almost a month due to a spurious complaint from a

Skeptic in the UK and a subsequent DOS (Denial of Service) attack which

was all I was able to work on for weeks at a time. Then, as soon as that

situation had calmed down, the flu vaccine issue arose and that has been

fairly overwhelming so I do apologise for the delay and hope you all

understand. Nobody will miss out on a copy of their magazine because if

you are entitled to 6 copies (for instance) you will get 6 copies - you

may just have to wait a wee bit longer to read them.
