I have recently discovered that I have an impacted wisdom tooth. I was sent by

my dentist to an oral surgeon. This surgeon insists that before my tooth is

pulled I need to have a phyical exan because 1- I have an irregular heart beat;

2- I have problems with mediation that cause kidney problems; 3- I have asthema.

My question is, do US laws require this? I am 62 years old and have avoided

doctors for the last 30 years.

I really hate the idea of taking a physical exam. I am not even sure what all

that requires. I know I have to have blood work, but what about mamagrams and

pap smeers? Would I have to have an MRI? I know this probably sounds dumb to

some of you but I honestly don't know what all I will be subject to if I agree.

I live in Alabama. Thanks for your help.

I don't think state laws require a physical prior to any dental procedure but the dentist might need to know your heart/lung or kidney condition before choosing and administering an anesthetic. Anything like an MRI, mammogram or pap smear would have no bearing on this so please do avoid them, esp. the mammogram or MRI. Removal of an impacted wisdom tooth is a surgical procedure.Betsyfree2wait <free2wait Sent: Tue, April 13, 2010 6:15:41 PM dentsts

They will probably only listen to your chest, and take vital signs, B/P & temp, heart rate, nothing more detailed than that - only a precaution so your heart is safe - BUT what is stopping you ringing either the dentist or the doctor and asking them? That way you will know precisely what they want. It's not a sexual issue, its a cardiac issue.

I have no idea, but I’d sure check to see if other

dentists require this??? If your state laws do? Go do another state. My

sister goes to Mexico

and gets CHEAP care in excellent clean offices and has no problems. I haven’t

been to a doctor in 30 years either, but I know they can’t require you to

take tests you don’t want. See if there is a dental college in your city

or nearby. Perhaps their rules are different. I’d sure get several

opinions on this dentist’s ideas.

Love and blessings,

Jan

Honestly, I am not surprised to hear this - he doesn't want to kill you in the

chair! :-) I know how you feel, because I avoid western medicine like the

plague, and I am dismayed at any situation that forces me into the system. But,

really, it sounds as though he is a terrific dentist - taking every precaution

in order to protect your health...he must know that there is a very tight

connection between oral health and the heart, the heart and the kidneys, and of

course, between breathing and anesthesia. I am not a dentist and I don't play

one on tv, but if I presented myself to a dentist with these findings in my own

health and he was willing to just put me under without knowing that I was fit to

be under, I'd be more than a little nervous. Go to a more holistic physician

such a DO - they are as educated as an MD (I would argue that they are more

educated, actually), but with a more whole thinking about the body and health.

Allopathic medicine is great with diagnostics and trauma. Protect yourself with

knowledge for you and your dentist before you go under. I wish you well!
