ear mites in dogs

Does anyone have a remedy for ear mites in dogs???? It is very hard to get the drops in the ear of a Retriever 2 times a day. I wonder what the old timers used. I have wasted almost all of the Tresaderm which has to be rrefrigerated as well as the drops twice a day in the ear. This condition dates back to 2007 and it is now pretty miserable. Two Retrievers have this. sharon

Warm some olive oil. Put drops of that in every day for 3 or 4 days, then clean the ears thoroughly. The oil smothers the mites. When you put the drops in, kind of smoosh the ear around to get that oil down into the ear canal. Give it a few days before cleaning the ear of debris, then perhaps do another round of oil until you are not getting any more gunk from the ears.

 

Since a retriever's ears are long, it's a perfect ground for fungus and such too. If you are sure it's mites, use the oil. If it's fungus you will need something else. In any case, once the mites are killed, just make sure to keep the ears clean. The oil is only used once a day.

 

My cat had a terrible case of mites and her ear filled up with fluid from scratching so much. We never saw her scratching, but apparently she did when we weren't looking and did enough damage that when the whole upper ear swelled, when it drained out she got what's called a cauliflower ear--all short and wrinkled. I took her to the vet when her ear swelled, thinking she had an infection. When he checked he said she had a terrible case of mites and that's what caused it.

Neem oil is EXCELLENT for mites. Kills em off in a jiffy.

Thank you the ear mite solution. I found the same kind of solution but used tea tree oil instead of olive oil. Tea tree oil BURNS the skin unlike NEEM or OLIVE OIL.

Please don't use tea tree oil on cat's especially, as it is toxic to them. And anything put into a dog or cat's ears goes immediately into their blood stream. That's why the olive oil is ok for use. I would not use straight tea tree oil in my dogs ears--too rapid absorption, though I would use it, if necessary, on the body skin, say like for a hot spot. But never, in any form, on a cat.
