You are also the fond student a few years ago of Nam Singh in San Francisco. Great to know you are well and among us.

hello from a new member

Hello everyone

I've been led here by my friend Ken Rose; met by good graces in Beijing at the temple of Confucius.

I'm an ACTCM graduate with a few years experience running my own clinic in Kentucky. I lived in Taiwan for six years previous to studying in San Francisco. These days, I teach a medical translation class at the Beijing Univ. of TCM and work/study at the Ping Xin Tang Clinic of TCM.

glad to be here

Jason, and everyone,

> Hello everyone I've been led here by my friend Ken Rose; met by

good graces in Beijing at the temple of Confucius.

Just to set the record straight, you

and I have never been in the temple of

Confucius at the same time. We have

been in that teahouse across the street

on several occasions. But we met in

the courtyard of Tian Shi Dong on

Qing Cheng Shan.

This might seem like a trifle, hardly

worth mentioning. But for some reason

I feel moved to pay attention, even

to the slightest details.

If you're going to tell the story of

how we met, it should be fully told.

And welcome to the list!

In case others don't recognize the name,

Jason is the translator of the article

from Dr. Fan and Zhang Xiao Tong that

I posted here last week.

Your materialization here offers me

the chance to publicly thank you for

your hard work.

I hope that others who still doubt the

efficacy of knowing Chinese language in terms

of studying Chinese medicine will question

Jason about his experiences.

Jason is fluent in Mandarin and as can

be seen in his translation of that

article, highly capable as a translator

of Chinese medical material. And he

has accomplished all of this simply

by doing it and while being just an

average guy from Louisville, Kentucky...

....the greatest city in the world.

I studied at Xi Yuan in '88. It was a career shaping experience for me.

Yes the class I teach (when the University isn't closed down by SARS) is a class for TCM students with advanced English skills who are interested in translation. I just recieved 150 translations before the school closed down on various concepts from TCM fundamental theory.

OK, I suppose I should touch upon the

topic of synchronicity for a moment. I am also from Louisville, KY. It turns out that

Jason’s dad is my mom’s Doctor. I thought his introductory

message sounded familiar so I double-checked with her earlier today. Though

I’ve never met Jason, over the years I’ve gotten updates from my

mom on his path. From his time in Taiwan, followed by his studies at ACTCM, then on to his clinical

experience in Louisville, and ultimately his return to China. If you’re

out there Jason, I think your father must be awfully proud. It truly is a

small world.

PS – Jason, thanks for the article

translation. I suggest that if anyone posts translations in the future it

would be helpful, if at all possible, to see a PDF, or even a bitmap scan of

the original. This approach was taken by Craig and Nigel in their Shang1

Han2 Lun4 translation and as a beginning translator I can’t begin to tell

you how useful it is. If this is an inappropriate forum for that then I

suggest posting a character version on the TranslateChineseMedicine group,

assuming of course that the effort isn’t too time consuming.

The greatest city in the world.

It turns out that Jason's dad is my mom's

> Doctor. ...

Speaking of synchronicity, I met Jason back

in 2000 on Qing Cheng Mountain and we spent

a little time together in Chengdu after that.

Back in January or February, I was in an

office at CCTV and the phone rang, so I

answered it. It was Jason, asking for me.

We hadn't seen each other for two and half

years and had not been in touch once over

that span of time.

Oddly enough, I wasn't in my office. Just

happened to be in this particular office

using a computer terminal. And Jason, it

turned out, just happened to be watching

TV and saw me doing something or other

and called the number on the screen, which

turned out to be the number in this office.

So this guy is just dripping with synchronicity.

Or maybe it's something they put in the

water in Louisville.

It moved me from being a mediocre herbalist to being the owner of an herb

company and an herb teacher. It was very empowering for me to see herbs

used pragmatically in clinical situations.

I'm quite honored by all of this talk of synchronicity; thanks and hello to Tim.

If anyone else knows my parents, I'll take my answer off the air.

  • 6 years later...

My name is Nadia and I'm here to talk about health issues that concern me and my

family and I enjoy reading these posts.

I have a number of musculo skeletal problems, neurological impairment and Lupus.

My husband has s T3 incomplete spinal cord injury. I have come to believe that

alot of what doctors tell us is not in my best interest, but instead what's best

for him AND me (and that's far different). So basically, my philosophy is to

educate myself as much as I can about our conditions and treatemt options.

I'm hoping some insight from this group will add to my grab-bag of info, and

maybe I can contribute some of what I've learned too. Best health everybody!
