Guest guest
Well it looks like sun cycle 24 is coming into its own....the large M class was almost an X---and looks like another active region is coming around the corner---and a coronal hole will likely boost solar winds----so here we go....... Thinking out loud---wonder if all those large 'objects' seen around the sun have a part in this.... BTW---the website below has pretty complete info for the coming cycle and sun events. http://www.solarcycle24.com/ New Region Region 1048 / Aurora Watch 02/13/2010 by Kevin VE3EN at 22:00Comment on Message Board Easterm Limb Region 1048 - A C9.6 Solar Flare (Borderline M-Class) took place on Saturday and the source was a new region numbered 1048 now rotating into view on the eastern limb. Click on the link below to watch. Movie of C9.6 Solar Flare Region 1048 (Saturday) Solar Update - All three regions 1045, 1046 and new region 1048 have the ability to produce C-Class and M-Class flares. Any such explosion, especially around geoeffective Sunspot 1046 could propel a CME towards earth and spark auroras. Sunspot 1045 is making its way onto the western limb. An aurora watch is effect within the next 48 hours due to effects of a possible incoming CME impact. There is a 40% chance of minor geomagnetic storming. Sunspot 1046 produces M8.3 Flare - Sunspot 1046 produced a strong M8.3 Solar flare on Friday morning which is now the largest flare of Cycle 24. An R2 Radio Blackout did take place. It also appears that a geoeffective full-halo CME was associated with it. Click on the link below to download a STEREO Behind movie showing the ejection. There is a chance this CME could reach earth by Monday and help produce minor geomagnetic storming. CME Movie captured by STEREO Behind M8.3 Solar Flare (Friday) Click HERE for a movie of the flare Solar Flux - The first Solar Flux reading on Friday from Penticton was 100.2. The second reading was 95.5 with the official Flux reading of 96. This is the first time in Cycle 24 where the Flux had a reading of atleast 100. A higher solar flux is vital to improved band conditions on HF, especially for bands such as 10/12/15m. The past few days,12m and especially 15m have been quite active with nice openings between North America and Europe. There was also a nice JA opening on 17m Thursday night. Sunspots 1045 and 1046 (Saturday) SDO Launch - The launch of the Solar Dynamics Observatory took place Thursday morning and you can watch the launch at the link below. This will be the start of a mission that will enhance the way we look at the sun and beam to earth High Quality images of our star. Regions 1045 (N24W69) and 1046 (N23W11) were stable during the period producing only low level C-class events. Both regions maintained Beta-Gamma magnetic classifications. New Region 1048 (N23W90) was numbered during the period after producing two C-class flares, the largest a C9.6 event at 13/1239Z, observed on SXI from around the east limb. No spots have been reported yet. Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be low to moderate with a chance for high activity on days 1-3 (14-16 February). Geophysical Activity Summary 12/2100Z to 13/2100Z: The geomagnetic field was mostly quiet with a single period of unsettled conditions from 13/15-18Z. Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet for day 1 (14 February). Unsettled to active conditions with a chance for isolated minor storming is expected on day 2 (15 February) with an increased chance for minor storming on day 3 (16 February). Activity is associated with the midday, day 2 arrival of the 13 February CME, and a recurrent coronal hole high speed stream. [Latest Report] The new Internet Explorer® 8 - Faster, safer, easier.
