http://snipurl.com/u50i5 [One Click]UK Government Pressures Doctors To Rid Them Of Deadly Swine Flu VaccineThe Jobbing Doctor 19 January 2010The Odd One Out We are getting pressure from our Primary Care Trust (PCT) to comply with the instructions from the SHA and department to take part in a Locally Enhanced Service for giving swine 'flu' vaccination to our patients."Other practices are doing it", I hear, as they try and make me feel guilty about not being keen to take part in this programme.I have, like other GPs been deeply sceptical about the way in which the swine flu pandemic has been dealt with by the authorities from the outset. My colleague GP informed puts it most succinctly.I also have significant concerns about the fact that many of those on the advisory committee advising about swine flu vaccines have significant links to Big Pharma. The British Medical Association (BMA) looked at the way in which Government had set up the programme to run this programme and said that it was not financially viable for practices to run the programme. Their advice was not to do it. There are methods that can ensure that those who want the vaccination can have it.Would I advise my patients to have the vaccination? Would I have it myself? Would I recommend it for my family? The answer to these questions are all 'no'.This is based on a number of criteria, and a risk-benefit analysis of immunising against a relatively minor illness. The benefits are not such that I feel that I can give unconditional support. The local PCT (now officially re-branded at great expense as NHS Dullsville) are putting pressure on us to do it, because they are being told to from higher up the food chain. The problem with GPs is that they are independent practitioners who make up their mind on what to do, based on the needs of their patients.I don't feel that the case for Swine 'flu' vaccination is strong enough. The Jobbing Doctor is a GP working in a large industrialised conurbation outside of London.
