communities. They pitch in to help each other. Growing up on a farm

in Iowa, I

remember when a man was too ill to bring in his crop or plant it, the other

farmers all showed up to help him. No one was ever left behind.

They all worked until it was done, and no one thought it was anything

Maryland farmer John Helmstetter thought his life was ruined after a fire

destroyed his barn and a third of his cattle. But he regained the

" American

Spirit " when his neighbors and local Amish banded together to help.

Hundreds

of Amish men worked for three days to raise the building that provided John

with his livelihood.
