Hi Friends,

 

I had lovely Christmas and New Years

celebrations this year. I enjoyed so many good visits with friends and

family. One friend stopped by who is so busy that we rarely get together

for real one-on-one time.

 

During the course of the visit Carol

mentioned that she was stressed because of her terrible fear of spiders.

She lives out in the country, and because of the cold weather she could no

longer go outside to smoke her cigarettes, so she had been going to the cellar,

which seemed to be more like an old fashioned underground fruit storage room

-- dirt floor, poorly lit, and cobwebs and spiders! She expressed

her terror every time she went down to the cellar. Her worst fear she

could imagine was a spider coming down from the ceiling and dangling in front

of her face! Running a close second was a spider running across the floor

and onto her shoe!

 

Noting her obvious mental distress, I

gave her a quick lesson in the relaxation technique I teach. She

estimated that her fear/stress level was at a Nine or Ten on a scale of 1-10,

and she was obviously disturbed by even the thought -- shuddering and showing

her complete disgust. After we used the relaxation technique, I asked her

to picture her worst fear again. A smile spread over her face, and she

said she could find no fear at all. It had dropped to zero!

 

So we went to #2, the spider climbing

onto her shoe. She said that wasn’t quite as disturbing, maybe an eight

on a 1-10 scale. We used the relaxation technique on that for a bit, then

I asked her to picture a spider running over her shoe. Again she said it

dropped to zero.

 

But she added, “Now I have a pain

in the center of my forehead.”

 

So we spent a few minutes relaxing that

tension as well, and she declared that pain completely gone.

 

We enjoyed the remainder of our visit and

we parted.

 

A few hours later she called me to report

that on the way home, she had looked at her rear view mirror and a SPIDER had

dropped down and was hanging from her rear view mirror! She laughed and

said, “How’s that for a test? And it didn’t bother me in the

least!”

 

A few days later, she also told me she

used it to stop an allergy attack. “Normally, when my eyes start to

itch and water I know an attack is coming on. I neglected to take an

allergy pill, as I normally would have, and the itching became worse with eyes

my eyes watering.” I immediately used the relaxation

technique and the attack just stopped.”

 

What a great way to finish 2009!
