Some years we have 12 full moons, others 13. Blue Moon FolkloreThe actual term “blue moon” dates back at least 400 years, and is used when describing events that happen rarely if ever. The next blue moon will not visit until August 31, 2012 and the next blue moon to occur on New Year's Eve will not happen until 2028. Occasionally there will be a year with two blue moons.
