Guest guest
http://nephropal.blogspot.com/2009/09/statins.html Some of my patients are already aware that I have no great love for statins. They have multiple side effects such as liver dysfunction and muscle weakness/aches. Statins have had positive outcomes in studies due to their anti-inflammatory effects. One recent study has shown that atorvastatin (Lipitor) (click) increases Vitamin D levels. This may be one f the mechanisms of why statins have anti-inflammatory effects. Well, forget it! I would rather take Vitamin D and be on a wheat free diet. Dr. BG from Animal Pharm has two great recent posts on lipids and statins. I highly recommend reading them. http://drbganimalpharm.blogspot.com/2009/09/cardio-controversies-tale-of-two-ldls.html http://drbganimalpharm.blogspot.com/2009/09/cardio-controversies-dr-superko-md.html Important points that she notes: 1) Crestor (rosuvastatin) (click) increases small LDL levels if triglycerides are low. 2) Statins may raise Lp(a) levels 3) Statins do not improve small dense LDL or IDL levels
