Dear Stargazer,

Your son is eligible for Social Security Disability or in his case SSI. He needs to contact an Social Security lawyer. These lawyers advertise and are specialists in getting through the endless paperwork and beaucracy and can expedite getting him in the system. Since he is 17, most likely he will be eligible for SSI (Soc.Sec. for Indigents) and will also qualify for Medicaid (which pays for a lot more than medicare). He will in effect be drawing eligibilty from your SS & medicaid is paid by the state. I have helped many people apply for this. Don't waste any time with Welfare Dept. - for directly to SS lawyer. The govmt pays for part of his fee and some will come from his pay when he gets it.

Have him contact a Soc. Sec. Lawyer ASAP.

Have you tried getting him insurance under a program called "Basic Health"? This may be for adults only, but Washington also has free or minimal cost insurance for kids. Call his local welfare office - they know about these programs.

My son lives in Washington state. He was injured in a car wreck when a

17 year old girl slammed into the back of his car while he was waiting

for a red light to change. He had liability insurance but no personal

injury insurance. She only had $30,000. The lawyer took $14,000, he paid

$4,000 of the $l7,000 doctor bills, and he had to go bankrupt for the

rest of it. He has no income, I am his sole support. He has applied to

all of the Washington state health programs that are supposed to be free

and all of them tell him they are NOT taking any new patients. He is

constant pain and there is no doctor that will treat him because he has

no money and no insurance. How can a National Health Plan be

detrimental to people like him? He needs help, he needs medication and

treatment and cannot get any. I am on a fixed income, but helpp him as

much as I can. We can not get help for him. Where are we to turn to? He

has even thought of committing a crime so he can go to jail and get free

medical help. I don't know what to do.

Dear Ann, if you don't mind my adding my two cents worth here, I would like to say, the system is rigged so that if you do not hire an attorney, regardless of your continued efforts you will be denied coverages> Even after you hire a competent attorney, do not expect results for at least a year. You see, the attorneys can only collect 25% of the "first" paid check, so even though they win your case they will delay settlement until the retroactive payment backs up for at least a year, making their first payment 25% of the first paid year.
