How much fish oil to take to protect against heart disease

02 September 2009

We're all getting the message that fish oils can protect us against heart disease – but how much do we need to be taking each day?

A daily dose of 200 mg of omega-3 fatty acid is enough to prevent heart disease, diabetes and ageing in a healthy male, researchers have found after researching the effects on 12 volunteers aged between 53 and 65. The men consumed a range of quantities of omega-3, from 200 mg right up to 1600 mg, every day, and discovered that the lowest amount was, in fact, optimum.

You can get omega-3 from oils, supplements and by eating fatty fish, such as salmon and tuna.

I don't believe that you should measure the total amount of fish oil, but the amount of EPA in the oil. It's not the size of the capsule, but what's in it that matters

The average fish oil capsule on the market contains 1000 mg of fish oil, 180 mg of EPA and 120 mg of DHA. Other caps contain 300mg of EPA, So, you would need to take two of the average kind or one of the "super" kind.

The DHA component is essential for the brain more so than the heart

If your concerns are for the heart look for the EPA amount. If they are for the brain (to prevent senility) look for the DHA amount. If they are for the gut you need the EPA to heal inflammation and you should take an enteric-coated capsule of a frozen cap on an empty stomach.

Also, if fish oil caps make you burp up the fish taste, you should take them frozen just before you eat on an empty stomach, If you burp fish oil it, may be because your pancreas is not producing enough lipase (fat-digesting) enzymes and probably not enough of any enzymes. Take a complete enzyme mid-meal.--- On Thu, 9/3/09, Clare <theclaremcharris wrote:
