Guest guest
Statin-induced myopathy So many people are now taking statins that all doctors need to be familiar with their adverse effects, and Annals of Internal Medicine has a useful review of statin-related myopathy. The commonest form – myalgia – affects as many as 10% of people prescribed statins and is often troublesome enough for them to discontinue treatment. More severe forms include myositis and rhabdomyolysis, but are fortunately much rarer. Risk factors include a history of myopathy while receiving another lipid-lowering agent, a family history of statin-related myopathy, high-dose statin therapy, increased age, female sex, and use of medications metabolised through the cytochrome P450 system. The mechanisms responsible for the myopathy are still far from clear. source: http://www.onmedica.com:80/BlogView.aspx?blogid=c816ff24-dc8c-4dfc-a40e-a55399bd4674 & postid=eefa78e4-68a3-46bd-86b1-2f98e1afc3c5
