The World Health Organization officially declared a pandemic on Thursday for the virus, also known as the swine flu, and Baxter shares have been on the rise since amid expectations this will trigger orders between health organizations and vaccine makers, including Baxter. Earlier Friday, Novartis AG released positive data on a vaccine for swine flu and said it had produced its first batch weeks ahead of expectations. Baxter, based in Deerfield, Ill., said in a release that "a number of national public health authorities" have existing agreements with the company that allow them to place orders following the pandemic declaration.
