By Richard Alleyne, Science Correspondent Last Updated: 10:01AM BST 01 May 2009 Very low levels of lithium in drinking water may help prevent suicide in the general population Photo: GETTY The study has prompted calls for further research into the possibility of adding lithium to drinking supplies – like water fluoridation to improve dental health. Researchers at Oita University in Japan measured natural lithium levels in tap water in 18 communities in the surrounding region of southern Japan. The lithium levels ranged between 0.7 micrograms per litre and 59 micrograms per litre. The researchers then calculated the suicide rate in each of the 18 areas. They found that the suicide rate was significantly lower in those areas with the highest levels of lithium in the water. Writing in the British Journal of Psychiatry, the researchers said: "Our study suggests that very low levels of lithium in drinking water can lower the risk of suicide. Very low levels may possess an anti-suicidal effect." Lithium is a naturally occurring metal found in variable amounts in food and water. In medicine, very high doses are used to treat bipolar disorder and mood disorders. But so far the potential benefit of using low levels of lithium to reduce the risk of suicide has not been studied closely. Professor Allan Young, a Vancouver-based psychiatrist, has described the study as "intriguing". Professor Young said: "A logical first step would be for the Medical Research Council to convene an expert working party to examine the available evidence and suggest further research. "Large-scale trials involving the addition of lithium to drinking water supplies may then be feasible, although this would undoubtedly be subject to considerable debate. Following up on these findings will not be straightforward or inexpensive, but the eventual benefits for community mental health may be considerable." Guest guest
A starting point may be to research the area outside San Diego where they used to have a natural Lithia soda springs bottling company and Lithia waters. Some years ago (probably about 12-17 years ago) I read in one of the local San Diego area papers about how people would come from great distance to obtain the Lithia water from that town/area for the reported health benefits. It seems to me the town/area's name started with B but I don't recall for sure. I just checked on the net & couldn't find reference to that water, but here is a link to other early bottled lithia water: http://alamo.nmsu.edu/~lockhart/EPSodas/Chapter6/6b/chap6b.html There are approximately 5 forms of lithium I believe, with the carbonate being the stronger medical one which has to be monitored to make sure the blood stays in the right, narrow range to avoid toxicity and still be effective. The other lithiums are used apparently with some success and benefits to those without classic bi-polar and perhaps by those with unipolar depression and some other conditions. Of course, the difference in issues would be "freedom of choice" to drink it or not!! Joyce Simmerman There is ALWAYS a "BETTER WAY"! Together WE can find IT and make IT a "Cradle for Humanity"! Guest guest
Yes I'm not against making things available---but not putting it in the water so you have no choice---that is the crux of the problem...
