Depends on the person. After about the 10th time you apply it, your leg, knee, etc (tissue starts turning red) and you should stop using it until the inflamation goes away. Lou

The burning/itching sensation is normal. I would apply it as often as you are able to. Once it dries, apply continuously as you are able. The more times you put it on the faster you will heal. It will take away the inflammation and help your body to heal much faster. Football players have been using this since the 70's to help them play when they are injured or recover much faster from injuries. 60 minutes did a piece on it.
