Sergeant Alisha Mason joined the U.S. Army September 9th, 2001 and was stationed in Germany with the 66th Transportation Unit. She was deployed to Iraq January 8, 2004 through 18 February, 2005. She says, “I was promised I would never be in combat because I am a woman, but she was forced into combat as a Transportation Unit driver of gun trucks. “I was attacked almost daily.†Her unit drove over 1.5 million miles during her 13 months in Iraq. “We usually slept where ever we were, usually outside somewhere and even outside the safety nets of the bases. I became very ill in Iraq with a lot of gastrointestinal problems and then numbing spells.â€

 

She says her illnesses were chronic, embarrassing, and painful but everywhere she went for help, she was told it was all in her head and that she was suffering from PTSD. “I believe that PTSD is a guise for the government’s cover up of chemical poisoning, and that DU is a war crime because of all the destruction it causes.â€

 

Two years ago, she went to a local Veteran's Administration (VA) hospital for an endoscopy, after years of chronic severe stomach problems. She recalls two female nurses and one male doctor gasping as they watched the image of the camera going down her throat. The inside of her stomach looked as though it were made of a weapons' barrel. For a month after, her stomach lining felt like it had been cut out. The VA wanted her to return in 3 months but she “decided to keep my 'evidence'. I want proof; because if proof brings justice then I will die for justice! Many people have died from this.†One of her medical records did show metal inside her in her foot and chest. The VA had done full body cat scans on her but refused to give her copies of them.

 

“I spent a lot of money writing l people to bring awareness and justice to this cause- I don't care how much it cost or how much work I have to put into…no one deserves this pain. I’m suddenly allergic to many foods I grew up eating. Smells bother me; I can't pump gas into my car without getting sick. I hold my breath to avoid smelling fumes and cigarettes. It feels like tiny particles of glass cutting open my lungs each time I try to breathe.â€

 

She wants to help those going through the agony she is experiencing by forming the CRI Foundation--a non-profit for people with Combat Related Illnesses, to include PTSD and chemical poisoning. “There is an estimated 350,000 sick troops from the current war in Iraq. Future goals of the foundation are to create a nature park for the community to walk their dogs, or exercise along the paths—a way for public awareness to combat related illnesses like PTSD and chemical/radiation poisoning. I really want to bring more awareness to the illnesses, so that more Research & Development may be done in order to find some kind of relief or cure to the CRI.â€

 

Radon is the poisonous gas released by the natural decaying process of uranium and radium. In areas where the concentrations are high enough to mine, about 5 tons of soil yield 1 tablespoon of uranium ore. Uranium is a heavy metal, like mercury and lead. When placed in munitions (called Silver Bullet), it destroys enemy armor because of its unique ability to ‘self sharpen’ as it burns through armor plating. When a 120mm M829 tank shell, which contains a solid 10.8 pound dU penetrator, hits its target, up to 70% of the dU is aerosolized into uranium oxide dust. Blown by the wind, these toxic microscopic radioactive particles can be easily ingested, inhaled or enter through an open wound.
