Guest guest
In my Pharmacology class today, the instructor (psychiatric RN in a hospital setting) told us two startling things: 1. Depression is predicted to surpass heart disease as the number one cause of disability in the U.S. in the very near future. Granted, now that it is recognized as a disease, it can also be the cause of disability. Even so, the thought that there are more depressed people in the US than those with heart disease is, well ...depressing. 2. In US hospitals, the government is now mandating that if an inpatient has an elevated blood sugar (even non-diabetics, there for another condition), they are to be put on insulin -- no discussion or alternatives. We were told this has been implemented in most major hospitals in our state, and it is now moving to the smaller hospitals. All hospitals have a specific deadline for implementation. The instructor said it is a matter of time before this is a mandatory requirement for doctors' offices, as well. What's next? Dialysis?
