Sacramento County Animal Control has had four horses since the end of November from a neglect case. It usually depends on the Grace Foundation in El Dorado Hills to take care of neglected and abandoned horses, cows, goats and sheep. But the Grace Foundation has 114 horses, not to mention rescues such as a baby goat born to an emaciated mother. The foundation is overwhelmed with animals left homeless by foreclosures, or those that are abandoned or dropped off by people who can't afford them. "Before, we never thought about euthanasia with horses and that being an option, but each time we take in a horse, it's at least a $1,200-a-year commitment," foundation director Beth DiCaprio said. There are also fewer donors, and fewer people adopting the foundation's animals. Four horses that are young have been up for adoption for a month. "We've not had anyone interested in them at all, so I think that's an indication of what's going on across the country right now. Horses are very expensive to keep," said Pat Claerbout, with Sacramento County Animal Control. The Grace Foundation is launching Project Hero to raise money and to help people care for their animals if they have the space but can't afford food and veterinary care.
