Hawaii is Leading the Way in Battle to Ban Harmful Sweetener - Aspartame

By Stephen Fox, 2/5/2009 12:00:40 PM

We have bills to ban Aspartame in both houses in

Honolulu; the one in the Senate, SB576, sponsored

by Senator Kalani English, has 13 more

cosponsors, or 56% of the 25 member Hawaii Senate.

There is also a Hawaii Senate Resolution

sponsored by Senator Suzanne Chun Oakland which

directly requests the as-yet-unappointed new FDA

Commissioner as well as Health and Human Services

Secretary-designee, Tom Daschle, to rescind the

approval for aspartame. Because we have

concentrated on the Senate and are in good shape

there at the moment, I believe, where we must

concentrate is the Hawaii House Health Committee.

The corporate lobbyists and retail merchants'

association will be fierce opponents of this

legislation and will fight it tooth and nail,

like bringing in really sick diabetics to

testify, who cry around about what they would

have to do to sweeten their food with an

artificial sweetener, neurotoxin and carcinogen like aspartame?

Count on this, for sure: the world's largest

Aspartame manufacturer, Ajinomoto, will bring in

a bunch of very expensive high power lobbying

muscle, like they did in New Mexico when an

almost identical Senate Bill to ban aspartame was

eviscerated by lobbyists and corporate attorneys for the manufacturers.

Thus, we need real grassroots connections in

Hawaii. People who can give up an hour or two to

send emails to Hawaii lawmakers and asking

friends and family there to get involved, please

do, so the corporate lobbyists for the world's

largest food poisoner won't stop this important consumer protection bill.

I believe the "test run" for aspartame was in Hawaii so they may have a ten year head start on us in noticing the side effects.--- On Thu, 2/5/09, Dr. Betty Martini,D.Hum. <bettym19 wrote:

Hi Tony, not quite sure what you mean. We first

tried to get aspartame out of New Mexico about a

year ago. I testified before the Senate and

House, but the capital was saturated with

lobbyists and front groups. Then we tried in

Hawaii and the bill didn't go through the last

time the legislature met last year. Now we have

the bill and resolution sponsored in Hawaii and

the resolution sponsored in New Mexico, but

called a memorial there in NM. So this is the

second go around for these two states, and there

are others who have written their senators in

other states trying to get the bill sponsored.

I can give anyone who wants to write their

Senator a copy of a letter someone sent for New

York, that contains both the bill and the

resolution. It would be nice to get it sponsored

in most of the US states. I can see them now

trying to get their lobbyists in say 25 states

all at the same time for this legislature.

All my best,

Betty

Dr. Betty,

Good to see that the Hawaii Reporter has published an article by Mr.

Fox on Aspartame. Normally, I don't waste my time reading the Hawaii

Reporter since its views are TOO CONSERVATIVE and gets me ANGRY. But

yes, very glad to see Senator Kalani English going for the BAN again.

Stupid diabetics need to get educated. Josephine

I think it was Hawaii Representative JOSH GREEN who heard the

aspartame ban bill in his committee last year and KILLED it. When I

talked to him months later, he said that it was IMPOSSIBLE to ban

aspartame because Hawaii imports most of its food from the USA and the

food from USA is already poisoned with aspartame. Now JOSH GREEN is a

SENATOR and who knows how he will treat this ban bill this time

around. For a medical doctor, he sure doesn't give a hoot about REAL

health when it comes to poisoning the food supply. Heck, he probably

eats aspartame on a regular basis.
