That's no Hollywood fiction: It's the way psychiatric hospitals are run in the state of Georgia.The U.S. Justice Department launched an investigation into the state mental hospitals in 2007 and found gross violations of standard medical care (which is even rather horrifying all by itself). Patients were dying for mysterious reasons and many were being abused by hospital workers. And when an investigation was conducted by the state of Georgia, it was carried out by the very same agency that runs the hospitals (so they investigated themselves and found nothing wrong).In all, 136 psychiatric patients died under "suspicious circumstances" from 2002 to 2006, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. That's when the feds stepped in and discovered horrifying violations of patient rights on the part of Georgia's psychiatric medical staff.As operated today across the country, mental wards are sort of like a "Guantanamo Bay" for psychiatric patients.
