My worry is that most of our supplements are made from ingredients manufactured by our pharmaceutical producers. They can intentionally make worthless or dangerous supplements that would lead to the banning of all supplements by the FDA.

We need to dismantle the FDA and have a private watchdog organization (much like Underwriters Labs does for the electrical industry) to monitor the safety, content, and efficacy of dietary supplements.

At this point in time the safest of all supplements are those that are patented by non-pharma companies or those made from whole foods.--- On Thu, 1/15/09, Viviane Lerner <vivlerner wrote:

Panel Blasts Federal Nanotech Risk Research Strategy

Long-awaited report gives Obama administration direction for change

Washington, DC – A National Research Council (NRC) committee today issued a highly critical report describing serious shortfalls in the Bush administration’ s strategy to better understand the environment, health and safety (EHS) risks of nanotechnology and to effectively manage those potential risks.

ScienceDaily (Jan. 15, 2009) — The ability of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to regulate the safety of dietary supplements using nanomaterials is severely limited by lack of information, lack of resources and the agency's lack of statutory authority in certain critical areas, according to a new expert report released by the Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies (PEN).

The report, A Hard Pill To Swallow: Barriers to Effective FDA Regulation of Nanotechnology- Based Dietary Supplements, details the main problems at FDA in regulating nano-enabled dietary supplements and offers a host of recommendations for improving oversight of such products.

"Historically, the regulation of dietary supplements has been a significant challenge for FDA, and the fact that some of those products are now being manufactured using nanotechnology creates an additional layer of complexity," says William B. Schultz, a co-author of the report and a former FDA official.

Little is known about the use of engineered nanoparticles in the dietary supplement market.. Current law requires supplement manufacturers to disclose limited information about their products, and what information is available is a result of dietary supplement manufacturers touting the use of nanotechnology when marketing their products, according to the report.

"While it is not possible to precisely determine the prevalence of dietary supplements using engineered nanoparticles, it is likely that the public's exposure to these products will grow significantly in the next several years," says Lisa Barclay, also a co-author of the report.

According to an inventory of federal environmental, health and safety research on nanotechnology maintained by PEN, the U.S. government is spending less than $1 million annually to study the direct impact of nanoscale materials on the gastrointestinal tract.

Tony I cannot remember where I read this but

it has been suggested? that most of the ingredients used in supplements and in drugs are manufactured in China etc.... then the individual ingredients are shipped back to our Countries for manufacture as pills and potions that can then carry the tag MADE IN etc......................

This is true for most drugs and supplements.

When you buy supplements you should know that the final purveyor has adeuate quality control and integrity so that contaminated and substandard ingredients are not sold.

If you buy based on price only (at Costco, Walmart, etc.) you place yourself at greater risk of getting not what you paid for and/or more than you bartgained for.

In the end, you are lucky to get what you paid for. You must buy from reputable manufacturers not repackaging agents.--- On Thu, 1/15/09, Clare@GOOGLE MAIL <theclaremcharris wrote:

Hi Clare, I'm sort of busting in on a conversation here so I hope you don't mind. I don't know about 'most' of the ingredients but it seems that the calcium is. However the same sort of 'made in????' carries true for many of the things we buy from cosmetics to food. Trying to buy something made and packaged in the same country can be difficult, as the box or pkg does not have to list where the actual product came from. You pretty well have to go on the Internet and it look up. Amber Sun(Rachel)--- On Thu, 1/15/09, Clare@GOOGLE MAIL <theclaremcharris wrote:Clare@GOOGLE MAIL <theclaremcharrisRe:

You are not butting in at all tiz an open group and good conversation is always welcome.

Now back to the discussion.

I have been noticing more and more in my local shops .... coz I specifically look to see where things are from... made etc..... comments such as Australian Owned.... YES!!! but then on further investigation, there will be inevitably the 'made in........" label which is not in Australia. There will be more and more of this needing to read the small print, especially after the melamine fiasco.......

Made in China from all Australian Materials..... arghhhhhhhhh

Thanks Rachel and Tony for your comments.
