Guest guest
Hi John, No need to worry. Diarrhea should not be an issue. The dosages would depend on how much milk they normally drink, all kids are different. I think that Stevia would be better than the corn syrup. I would make sure it was organic corn syrup if I used any at all. Stevia is a great sweetener without all the sugar content, so I think it would be best. I have given the formula to my daughter without any sweetener and she enjoyed it just the same. Of course, the only sugar she has ever had was from raisens ♥Kelly Kelly Shillington 888-898-9660 Smoky Mountain Trading Post Organic Solutions On 4/14/2010 5:03 PM, JohnP wrote: I made a double batch of this for my 2 grandkids, 17 and 19 mo. old. Then got to worrying, I know barley in soups will give a person diarhia if too much is taken or used. Since it doesn't have the cooked grains with it, is this an issue. How much would you recommend giveing and how often? The recipe doesn't say. The youngest tried an ounce and she loved it, wanted more. Tried it myself, and honestly one of the most fantastic tastes ever. Going to make some for myself, but use stevia instead of the corn syrup. Woould that be a better idea for the kids? They are very active and probably can easily burn the calories off. Walked and played in a very cold mtn. stream in WNC with her today. She doesn't mind that very cold water at all. My size 14 foot shrunk to size 11 or so. My sincere thanks for any advice. Guest guest
Thanks Kelly, Much relieved. I just made another batch, but this time I tripled the grains, and cooked them in a type 3 pressure cooker, that looses no steam and presserves the volatile nutrients that could be lost. This batch came out even better. Will try with no sweetner and if needed, will add a touch of liquid stevia, but like Doc's thinking not to encourage a sweet tooth. I also have the book Sugar Blues. Thanks again. PS, cuts cooking time in half and no worries about boiling dry. John herbal remedies , Kelly Shillington <kelly wrote: > > Hi John, > No need to worry. Diarrhea should not be an issue. Guest guest
Corn syrup has always been used traditionally to keep babies regular as formulas and milk can constipate babies. When my first two kids were babies and on formula (70's, need I say more?), my grandma told me to give a Tbls. or 2 of corn syrup in their bottles whenever they would become constipated. I didn't have to do this too often, but when I did, it seemed to help them move better. My oldest child had problems being constipated with the formula he was on (Similac with Iron), and eventually I took him off the Iron formula and gave him regular which seemed to work better for him. The last 6 kids (and born at home!) were all breast fed. I wish I had breast fed my first two, but I can't go back. They are both healthy "30 something" now. Guest guest
The corn syrup is the one ingredient that you can adjust the amount in the Barley Formula. Doc said that it is good to have some form of carbohydrate in the formula because babies and kids have such high energy. But you could put very little and it would be sufficient. The only thing is the corn syrup MUST MUST MUST be certified organic and Non-GMO. Last I checked Wholesome Sweeteners had a good organic corn syrup, but have not used it in about a year. Kelly Kelly Shillington 888-898-9660 Smoky Mountain Trading Post Organic Solutions On 4/15/2010 1:54 PM, Anella Russo wrote:  I thought that the sugar content was very important for developing babies, breast milk is very sweet, no? ...was I wrong about this?
