Also planted plums, currants, serviceberries, hazelnut, paw paw, gingko, and many others. Some are producing, but others are still small, but thriving. I also have numerous herbs planted everywhere. My personal choice for chickens (and ME) is the Persian Mulberry Tree. This one we had her in central California bore masses of lovely, big Blackberry-like fruit, that made some terrific blackberry-like jelly. The taste was absolutely gorgeous!~ Plus, should it be grown in a chicken yard, the chicks would eat the fallen berries that do make such a mess of concrete, but you can still pick them for your own use. Once you've eaten some and recognize the lovely odor, you will want your own tree in your back yard. Guest guest
Granny Pat, I do have a couple of little Mulberry trees in my orchard. They are not producing yet, too little. That's cool that my chickens will eat the berries that fall. They eat the apples and pears that fall now. Plus, I have actually watched the chickens jump to eat the grapes off the vines! The Soil Conservation in my county has a tree sale every spring. The trees are seedlings, but you can get like 5 Mulberry for $7, so that is how I have started many of my trees and shrubs. Plus, they are all native and that is important to me. Brian, What do you use the quail for? Do you eat the eggs? Peg
