Doc, according to all the geek speak, Vista is not really an upgrade.

However, my computer guy dh says that if you really want to try your

new thing, make sure you back up your computer first and have the

capability to restore the back ups. That is *NOT* just a back up of

data. That is the entire system, as the only way to get rid of vista

would be a complete wipe and reinstall of XP.

That is from my dh. Now for me, Vista is clunky and clumsy, slow and

obnoxious. I am not a fan. Vista's changes were all about style and

not substance, and the new style things actually slow the computer

down, with no appreciable change in anything but the number of colors

you can make your borders.

A quick internet search of xp vs vista yields no positive remarks on vista.

I use Vista on my new pc, however I still have XP on the other one; if there is something important I want to keep, I put it on the old one. Like my friend said...they own you with Vista. And why a free upgrade? Is this similar to the free laptops for schoolkids? I know you listen to Alex, you know what I am implying.Trina --- On Mon, 3/1/10, Doc <Doc wrote:

Doc,I work for computer services at the college where I attend (workstudy). I am going for a computer science minor, and I have a little business on the side working on computers. Having said all that two questions come to mind (well, other than the run, run far, far away as fast as you can from Vista) -- first - is it 32-bit or 64-bit -- apparently the 32-bit has fewer problems than the 64 does --- secondly, if your XP is working fine, why would you want to change? i service all windows operating systems - all the way up through windows 7 - and of all of them, vista is a very close second to the worst ever which was ME (millennium edition). XP has been the best by FAR!!!! (although windows 7 is an improvement over vista, it's still not XP quality)I hope others chime in with their

personal experiences. I have one friend who ran Vista and never had any trouble. I have a machine with Vista on it and while it's not terribly bad, it's not XP (which is terribly good) the other thing you need to think about is that most (if not all) of your software you are using on XP will not work on Vista -- very few programs are XP AND vista compatible.Good job doing your research!bobbie smith Doc <Docherbal remedies (AT) Groups (DOT) com; ThetaNet (AT) Groups (DOT) comSent: Mon, March 1, 2010 8:38:23 PM{Herbal Remedies} XP vs Vista

Doc:

Absolutely if your pc has enough memory or (RAM) You'll need to have at the least a Pentium 4 or a DDR Duel Processor Drive. I'd also recommend you have at least 2 Gig of RAM, they recommend 1.

I've had vista since Dec 2007 and I love it. Xp is fine but did have a lot more issues when it came out. June 1st 2011, XP is cut and will no longer be released.

They will not provide Customer Support after that. Oh and of course as we all should know they will be sending out let's say updates causing XP problems forcing the user to upgrade their system anyway. This is just my opinion! Clay.

Ps Happy with Vista and a bit concerned of the new operating system Windows 7. Havent tried that one yet.

Hi Doc,

I bought a laptop with Vista and while it's easy to use and has many great

features, it freezes up and shuts down A LOT! I have since purchased a new

laptop that has Windows 7 and that's working out much better. I have replaced

the drive in the old laptop twice and it's still having issues but it's good

enough for a backup. HOpe this helps you decide.

Funny. I heard that many people always had crashes with XP, but my XP worked perfectly. When I got a new computer it came with 32 bit Vista. Took some getting use to, and many times when I wanted to wall the computer :-) but once I got use to Vista it has worked consistently for me, just as xp did. I've never had a bit of problem with it. The frustration at the beginning was simply because they had that stupid pop-up 'do you authorize this action' thing, and had rearranged the look of stuff.

And yeah--some of my older xp programs won't work on vista. Some do. I've been told there's a method in vista to run all xp and even some older programs, but it involves rebooting and telling the machine to run those programs, and while doing that, you can't ALSO use the machine in vista mode. So I've never done it.

well i have Vista and have had alot of problems with it especially with trying

to open works documents anything from someone with vista cannot be opened by

other works users no matter how you save the file. The only way to use other

folks documents is to convert to PDF and the cost to upgrade to a program to do

that was about 90 canadian dollars. - Tracy

Thanks for the "heads up" on the planned dropping of support for XP and planned obsolesence with extra problems. Perhaps I will change over (finally) to Linux and forget the whole microsoft thing!! More trouble than its worth year after year .. been through it all ... and just when one gets one system figured out and can run it ..DOS 6 comes to mind .. running with Wordperfect with it's file manager which worked to find ANY WORD of ANY FILE on the PC .. no more!!! Then Win 95 was pretty good & worked with a lot. Then they started planning the obsolesence of all that to charge more every year or so for new systems. Who needs that kind of trouble?? I'm still using it by default as never quite was able to do Mac/ Linux when it was already into the business world but not quite able to do everything for connections I needed to have done then. Now can't afford MAC either ... would love to have.

I want to thank everyone

who responded. All of your input has been most helpful.

I've decided to pass on Vista at this stage of the game and may, "just

may" try out Window's 7.

Actually, I kind of like the linux format and just might end up with

Ubuntu which is FREE ! ! ! ! !

We'll see. Kinda snowed under with work at the moment.

Thanks again guys and gals, you're tops.

Hugs,

Doc
