Guest guest
We need to get rid of this bill permanently. This is one of those instances where absolutely no compromise is acceptable. When the House and Senate versions of the bills are brought together - which could be in a matter of months - Warner said it's impossible to know what will be cut and what will remain."  The issue of federally mandated mental health screening is not finished. The subject of alternative medicines is up for debate, Your ACTIONS are needed. Please take the time to read through this email.  The first article, below, was written by a CCHR Florida Volunteer, Gabe Colon and is very informative.  The second article, below, was written by another CCHR Florida, Deanna Calef and offers you information from several nationally known investigators.  These articles provide you with information and sources of informaiton that you can use to communicate to your Federal Legislators and State Legislators.  In the State of Florida, the issue of psychotropic drugging of children is being looked at.  Federally, the issue of health care is being looked at, mental health screening is a big part of this issue.  We need to continue to contact our Federal legislators and state legislators and voice our concerns. Get the facts, read these articles, in full, and contact your legislators.  To find you federal legislators: go to www.whoismyrepresentative.com To find your state legislators: go to www.cchrflorida.org/floridalegislators  WHY THE HEALTH CARE BILL IS NOT DEAD By Gabe Colon  The health care legislation that has progressed through Congress over the past year has done so in large part because of one number: 60. That's the magic number of Senators it takes in the United States Senate to end debate on a bill and bring legislation to a simple majority vote. Because a clear majority of Americans currently oppose health care reform (58% of the public is opposed according to the latest Rasmussen poll while just 39% favor) all 40 Senate Republicans have been united in opposition and have forced Democrats to hold all of their 60 senators at each crucial vote to advance the bill. On Christmas Eve 2009, 40 Republicans voted "no" to end debate, but 60 Democrats voted "yes" to advance the bill (and pass it). Had Democrats only had 59 Senators, the bill would have died last fall as Republicans would have the 41 votes needed to block a final vote. So long as Democrats held 60 votes in the U.S. Senate, there was simply nothing Republicans (or for that matter the average American citizen) could do to stop it. But all this was B.F. (before Brown).  On January 19th, Republican Scott Brown shocked the political world by defeating Martha Coakley in a special election in Massachusetts to replace long-time Democrat Senator Ted Kennedy. The implications of this race were enormous: Republicans now held 41 seats in the Senate and could block any attempt to ram health care through. So the bill is dead right? Not so fast. Here's how health care reform can still be enacted into law this year (from simplest to most complex):  1.) The House of Representatives could literally pass the Senate bill tomorrow morning and send it to the President of the United States to be signed into law. Remember, the Senate passed a health care bill before Scott Brown was elected. That bill is good until January of next year. It is simply sitting there. It can be taken up at any time by the U.S. House and there is nothing Republicans could do to stop it. It takes only 218 votes to pass a bill in the House and Democrats currently have 258 votes. So why don't they simply do this and be done with it? Because many House Democrats have major problems with the Senate bill. So much so that Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced a week after the Brown election that she did not in fact have the 218 votes to pass the Senate bill. On to potential solution number 2...  2.) The White House could try to convince the House Democrats to go ahead and pass the Senate bill with a promise that the things they do not like will be "fixed" later on. As Andy Stern, President of the labor union SEIU wrote, "Step One: The House should pass the Senate's health insurance reform bill - with an agreement that it will be fixed, and fixed right, and fixed right away through a parallel process." But remember, any "fixes" would then be subject to a brand-new Senate vote, an "After Scott Brown" vote. Republicans could block everything with that all-important 41st vote. But what if there was a way around that 41st vote? For Democrats intent on passing health care at all costs, there might be...  3.) Democrat congressional aides are now looking to use a special budget procedure to revise the Senate bill and avoid needing the full 60 votes. The procedure is known as reconciliation. Under "reconciliation rules" only 51 votes are needed to pass a bill. What is reconciliation? According to the Tax Policy Center, "congress uses the reconciliation process when it wants to legislate policy changes in mandatory or other direct spending or tax laws to achieve the budget's resolution's goals." As promised, we've gone from simplest to most complex. This is very tricky stuff, but essentially the idea is that if changes are made to the Senate health care bill that directly affect the budget, only 51 votes would be needed. Obviously many of the changes Democrats want to make are not budget related, and so they will have a very difficult time pulling this off (not to mention having to face enormous public backlash).  The health care bill is not dead. It is not dead until January of next year when the Senate bill officially dies and would have to be put back together again. For those who do not want to be mandated to purchase "government-approved" health insurance with mandatory mental health coverage, you should not rest now. Continue to call or fax the representative in your DISTRICT (remember, the fate of this rests most likely in the House. Find out who your local congressman is and urge them to let the bill die the death it so truly deserves).   Investigative Reports - Health Care by Deanna Calef  The mental health measures that were lurking in the Health Care Bill still pose imminent danger to every individual's well being and freedom. Will we allow our human race to be reduced to animals with the stroke of a pen? The World Health Organization, experienced practitioners, professional organizations and parents have come to similar conclusions. The mental health items in the Health Care Bill remain a grave concern and it is imperative that the public get educated as to what they are and how they can be influenced by them. Regardless of the current status of that bill, we need to communicate to our Federal and State legislators and let them know we oppose mental health screening, due to its lack of scientific evidence and the subjective nature of the questionnaires and that we oppose the psychotropic drugging of our nation.
