This is from my friend Charlie in Napa. I don't use them because they have mercury in them and you have to call a haz-mat crew to come clean it up if you break one!Trina

IMPORTANT:

We just had one of those CFL lights catch on fire in the kitchen light. There was no smell or smoke until I unscrewed the enclosed glass shade, then what a stink! It melted into the light bulb socket, that is how hot it was and it looks to me like it had been doing this for a while until it finally caught fire. The light was still working, by the way. I think these are very unsafe!!! Especially in an enclosed light fixture. The only place that flame had to go is up, and into my insulation which is that shredded newspaper stuff.

The light was made by "Lights of America" which is bullshit because it says it is made in China. It was a 26 watt one.

I'm going to be changing them out and going back to incandescent. Not worth losing my home in a fire over a couple of bucks savings. Better light anyway.

I thought they were going to outlaw regular old lightbulbs? I remember awhile back I stocked up on them b/c I read somewhere they would be banned. Too bad for the green people. I guess they missed the mercury they contain. Glenn Beck even showed on his show all the steps you must take to dispose of them - now add fire hazard. WOW!

I just had a fire in my dryer last week. Shook us up pretty good here.

Thanks for the warning.
