Definitions

Ode – Historically, an Ode was a poem that told a story and

was meant to be sung.

 

Ditties – Short little songs.

 

Nineveh – An ancient city on the Tigris River destroyed in 612

BC.

 

Mirth – Humor and Gaiety.

 

Babel – Taken from “The Tower of Babel”. In the Bible, a tower

that was built in an attempt to reach heaven. According to the Bible,

God frustrated the project by confusing the languages of its builders

so that they could not understand one another. Located in Babylon.

 

O’erthrew – Overthrew.

 

Introduction

The following poem was written in 1874 by Arthur O’Shaughnessy and

has always been one of my favorites. The message is timeless, and

relevant to what is happening at the present. I’m especially fond of

the last two lines which I consider show the character of a person.

The choice is ours, whether to be stuck in the death throes of an old

age, or to be joyously greeting a new dream with enthusiasm.

 

 

 

O D E

 

We are the music makers,

And we are the dreamers of dreams,

Wandering by lone sea breakers,

And sitting by desolate streams.

World-losers and world-forsakers,

On whom the pale moon gleams:

Yet we are the movers and shakers

Of the world forever it seems.

 

With wonderful deathless ditties

We build up the world’s great cities,

And out of a fabulous story

We fashion an empire’s glory:

One man with a dream at pleasure,

Shall go forth and conquer a crown;

And three with a new songs measure

Can trample an empire down.

 

We, in the ages lying,

In the buried past of the earth,

Built Nineveh with our sighing,

And Babel itself with our mirth;

And o’erthrew them with prophesying

To the old of the new world’s worth;

For each age is a dream that is dying,

Or one that is coming to birth...
