Guest guest
Chamomile tea. Good for baby, good for you, and it lowers blood pressure really fast. Chamomile doesn't taste all that great, in many people's opinions, so a lot of folks who choose to use chamomile instead of Western medicine usually find a tea that combines chamomile with others relaxing herbs, like Sleepytime, works for them. Check and see what your grocery store has. herbal remedies From: p31ladeeDate: Fri, 9 Oct 2009 20:45:19 +0000{Herbal Remedies} Need Help - Pregnant w/ HBP Hello all, I could really use help. In early first trimester diagnosed with high blood pressure (was borderline at one point but returned to normal). Was given a prescription for Aldomet (500mg) to treat the HBP. Did a little research on Aldomet and though it is "safe" for pregnancy, there are contraindications including liver damage. Diet is admittedly not 100% "clean" but is not close to "SAD" either. Cook with a lot of fresh herbs, do consume chicken, egg whites, and veggies (in fact there are two meatless days per week). Rarely eat beef or pork. Water intake is around 80oz a day. No coffee, non-smoker. What practical things can I do now to help bring the HBP down and avoid being on Aldomet for the duration of the pregnancy (I'd rather not start it but have to go back in two weeks for a check-up)? When I was borderline I was doing 2 cayenne and fresh lemon in water "drinks" per day and 2 fresh garlic cloves per day. (I don't have a lot of spare change but I am willing to splurge for my health) Please help! Thanks in advance New! Open Hotmail faster on the new MSN homepage! Guest guest
Hi. I have all my clients with HBP (even if it's just creeping towards too high) start on a calcium/magnesium supplement immediately (Doc's lemon egg!) Floridax makes a good one as well. Ca/Mag should bring it right down. I also suggest swimming as much as possible and increasing protein to about 100 grams per day. One thing I do not do is tell my mothers to cut back on salt. This is an absolute mistake - physiologically our blood contains a high amount of sodium and when we reach about 28 weeks of pregnancy, our blood volume doubles. When we are salting our food to taste and not cutting back, this doesn't present a problem. But when we begin to swell and our blood pressure goes up and we cut back on salt, our bodies begin to hold on even more tightly to the sodium and fluids, we swell even more and then we watch our blood pressure go even higher. It becomes a vicious cycle. We wonder why it isn't improving - but our bodies are very smart and you can't outwit it! It knows what it needs and it will hold on to whatever is there if you cut back. So, Cal/Mag three times a day, extra protein and adequate salt. Adequate, not extra. Take care and I hope this helps.Amy HansonBirth DoulaMidwifery StudentChicago areaA foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines.
