Elderberry Syrup recipe

I am WAAYY behind - saw this recipe from Oct & the statement was that her

family swears by it in the winter. Do you take it for something specific or

just as a preventative & if so what & how do you use it?

Thanks

It has long been believed that elderberry syrup/wine/tincture helps

the body beat the flu. In fact, the OTC Sambucul you now see on

drugstore shelves is made from elderberry. It used to be gracious to

offer your visitors a bit of elderberry wine in the winter when they

came to visit. Two results here: providing the guests with a tasty

libation, and two, helping prevent the spread of flu.

I keep elderberry syrup in my refrigerator. It never goes bad. You can

omit the vodka if you wish. From my recipe cache:

Elderberry Syrup

6 cups Elderberries -- fresh*

1/3 cup honey

1/2 teaspoon Ginger

1/4 teaspoon Cinnamon

1 tablespoon lime juice

2 cups vodka

Wash the elderberries, mash them, and juice them

through a strainer.

In a quart pan, mix the elderberry juice with the

honey, ginger and cinnamon.

Cover and simmer for 35 mintues. Remove from the

heat.

Add the lime juice and vodka.

Pour into a bottle, cap and store in the refrigerator

for up to one year.

Serving Ideas : Dosage: At first signs of flu

symptoms take 4

tablespoons a day. Serving Quantity on this recipe is

an estimate. Depends on how much cooks down, etc.

NOTES : *Or dried elderbereries that have been soaked

in water until plump

Elderberry Syrup - English recipe

A useful dessert sauce for pouring over puddings.

Ingredients

Elderberries - 450g (1 lb)

Boiling water - 1.2 litres (2 pints)

Caster sugar - 450g (1 lb)

Crush the elderberries and pour over the boiling water. Stir well and

leave to stand for 24 hours, then strain through a fine sieve or cloth

into a saucepan.

Stir in the sugar and boil until syrupy, then store in screw top jars

in the refrigerator.

I didn't get this Elderberry Syrup recipe. Is it available for us all ? I

would love to have it for health reasons, especially during the winter

months. I've been told I should get or make some but so far, I don't know

how. Is it shared somewhere on list ?

If someone has it, would you mind sending it to me ?

Thank you,

Jenn in Oregon

I was wondering if anyone has a recipe for elderberry syrup, that doesn't use sugar.

I also wonder about cooking it. Wouldn't that deplete the berries of their medicinal compounds?

I would like to make this syrup but am not sure where to start. So much conflicting info on the web.

Elderberries  are not safe to eat raw-  toxic.   It is in the boiling

that they are made safe and it releases the medicinal properties.

They  need to be sweetened,  if you really  don't want to use white

sugar   then  boil your berries  according to the recipe   and when

cooled  add some raw honey in equal amount to the sugar.   The honey

also  has medicinal properties  that you   don't want to boil away.

Hope this helps.
