Guest guest
I do not usually post here, just a lurker for years, but I have to sympathize....I had a car screamer twice now. Out of 4 children, 2 were HORRIBLE in the car. Like you said even a 10 min. drive was hell. Screaming to the point of choking, and I never leave my kids to cry....it would break my heart! The ONLY thing that worked occasionally was nursing while driving (my husband driving, me literally hanging over the baby like a gymnast!) I didn't use pacifiers, but even tried in desperation. NOTHING worked. I finally had to come to terms with the fact that every 10 min. trip took 40 min. with me stopping and taking walks, etc. My mindset helped a little, at least for me not getting as stressed, just accepting that this is the way it is. With my fourth baby (second screamer) I got a CD called "for crying out loud" it has many white noises on it from rain, to water running, to vacuums etc. It helped A LOT but had to be LOUD, and wasn't 100% cure, but made life way more manageable. I had tried rescue remedy and several other homeopathic remedies, none worked for either of them. Even though we use alternative meds almost exclusively. Each one of the children that did this did so for about 2 years I am not exaggerating But it got a little better as time went on, with a little longer trip. Now my 4th is 29 months and we can go about 40 min. That's it though We did invest in a portable dvd player for our car and sometimes if we use it, can go an hour without the screaming. But it is still high maintenance the entire trip. I have friends that travel all over w/ their kids....I am jealous....it's just not reality for us!I would say travel when the baby would be most likely to eat and then fall asleep for a stretch. (mid a.m., mid afternoon, night) and then feed until they fall asleep while in the seat. Also cue in to what noises and atmospheres the baby naturally falls asleep in and try to duplicate it as much as you can while in the car with recordings, or CD of the sounds. I hope it eases for you soon! Most babies outgrow it quickly....all except MINE! Guest guest
WHAT!!! Drug a 2mo. old ? Not on your life. Are you familiar with something called Rescue Remedy ? I believe its one of the Bach Flower Essences - one drop should calm her right down. Perhaps Doc even has it, if not its readily available online. Even if I go to the store .. the 10 min drive she cries all the way there. If my husband is with me I sit in the back seat with her but that seems to make things worse since she sees me she cries louder.. (GET ME OUT OF HERE!) which then my husband gets upset and doesn’t want to go anywhere.. As soon as I get her out of the car seat she is fine. I have tried bringing a vacuum, playing some classical music, talking to her.. and more.. but nothing seems to work.. she is fully fed and new clean diaper always before I put her in her car seat.. Guest guest
Yes, I think being strapped into the car seat may be upsetting her but who knows what it is as she can't talk yet to tell you. You can talk to her and see what she tells you through mommy to baby communication and intuition. Ask her and whatever pops into your head right away is her telling you what is going on. That's the mommy connection. I think it's most likely the restraints as that would be stressful to me. I think she will grow out of it. What you could do is put the car seat in the house. Let her get used to seeing it for a few days. Then put her in it without the straps on. If she cries take her out and try again later. Tell her about the car, the car seat and the reason for the straps. She may have no idea why she is being restrained. See if all of that helps. Babies usually get over it once they realized that the car seat is safe and they do eventually get taken out of it when they arrive somewhere. Another thing you can do is tell her how long the car ride will be and where you are going so she is in the loop of what is happening. I suggest you make sure she is really tired and well fed before you take that long car ride so that is your best chance of her sleeping all the way through the trip. Whatever you do, don't stop for anything if she is sleeping! Just keep going!! Good luck and have a safe, happy trip. Guest guest
Could be the seat is cold, or hard... I'd take the seat inside and put a soft comfy blanket in it. Feed, play and talk to her in it. Sheila ----- Original Message ----- Wani To: Wani Sent: Thursday, September 10, 2009 12:52 PM Subject: {Herbal Remedies} OT: 2 mo old car ride.. Guest guest
I find this odd, because the car usually relaxes a baby, so I'm guessing something in the car seat is hurting her. Take the seat fabric off if possible and check for protruding plastic or metal, maybe an odd bump where she makes contact, check the brace fabrics for possible objects, and check the seat fabric to see if any kind of pin or something is in it. Is the seat slanted in such a way that she has to strain to hold her head up uncomfortably? Are the restraints too tight? Is there a vent in the car that blows on her? Does she fuss when in a chair or walker without you around her? If it is not in her nature to cry when left on her own, I would think it is the car seat. If she does dislike being on her own, then travel during nap time whenever possible. Hopefully in a short time, she will get over this. I have a nephew, who as a baby couldn't bear to be without his mom. He would scream for hours until she returned. I finally found the trick to make him stop. I wore her perfume and kept him over my shoulder so he couldn't see me until I could get him to sleep. You have my sympathy. It is gut wrenching to hear your child cry and not be able to figure out what the problem is, so based on my nephew being so adamant for his mom, and he was between 2-5 months old during this time, I can understand what you are going through. Guest guest
Sounds like it has to be the car seat isn't comfortable. The liner has a bulge in it or something that causes pain or discomfort. I can attest to this in cars today for us to drive. I had to recently put my vehicle in the body shop and the first rental car they gave me i returned for something else because the lumbar support killed my back. Like a basketball there and no adjustment. A tall person would probably have been perfectly comfortable. The car i have now still has it but it doesn't "extend" out as far or however you say that. If you know someone that has a young child and uses a different car seat maybe ask to borrow it for a short ride and see how that works out. Be an inexpensive way to find out if that is the issue. --- On Thu, 9/10/09, Diane Mackey <dmackey00 wrote: - Wani Wani Thursday, September 10, 2009 12:52 PM {Herbal Remedies} OT: 2 mo old car ride.. Guest guest
My daughter was the same way at that age. She's now 5 months old and she loves the car. It really helped to give her a toy. She has a wash cloth type bear that she loves so she always gets that in the car now. We also bought a mirror to put on the back head rest so we could see her through the rear view mirror. We didn't get one initally because we were told they could be hazardous in an accident. The one we got actually straps down really well so the only way it'll come loose is if the head rest comes loose. She loves the mirror and her toy. They made a difference immediately. Guest guest
Get some foam padding and put under the seat cover and see if that helps > Sounds like it has to be the car seat isn't comfortable. Guest guest
do you nurse? if so, could you lean to be able to nurse while your Dh drives and her in her carseat? some people can. or even lean towards her to hold her while she's still buckled in her car seat.  Holly V.
