Guest guest
Valorie and I have been researching peaches and cream bicolor corn and trying to find out if this corn is GMO. The seed companies list this as a Hybrid SE/se.From what I know , hybrids can be cultivated by natural means but I suspect they can also be done in crazy non survival ways. We thought we would consult all you folks here and see if there are any Horticulture types on the list who could help us find out about this corn. Can a hybrid also be GMO and if not, are hybrids made by non survival techniques as well as natural means? Hope ya all can help ! Guest guest
I would not trust any corn anymore---even organic. Guest guest
A hybrid is just cross pollinated. Now whether Monstersanto has perverted it and done some GMO splicing in the process, I dunno. But most GMO corn is not sweet corn. As best as I can tell Peaches and Cream is just a cross between a sweet white corn and a sweet yellow corn. Guest guest
All GMO corn, as far as I know, is feed corn – so far. Peaches and cream corn came out a couple years ago I think. There are some double sweet corn hybrids out there this year but will hit your pocketbook pretty hard. We did plant half an acre to see if it really was sweeter than Silver Queen or King and it is, but I don’t think it was worth the extra $. I am getting top dollar for it tho, as there are those customers who just love sweet corn. Sweet corn can be either a non- hybrid type (heritage) or a hybrid, and doesn’t necessarily have to be a GMO corn. When using a hybrid, you can’t save the seeds as they won’t produce that same hybrid, they will be either parent stock or depending on filials could be any number of types. We plant non GMO corn and beans and hopefully there isn’t much cross pollination with our neighbor farmers as they also plant non GMO corn and beans. Although the drive is on to produce the sweetest corn out there, we plant heritage corn as we enjoy the flavor of corn – not how sweet it is. Some of the heritage corn makes some great popcorn.
