Shingles is caused by the same virus as Chicken pox. A couple years ago

my MIL had shingles and I read somewhere that ravensara is good for

shingles. She said that it helped her.

What is there in the area of EO's that work with Shingles ?

I am not even sure what it is and yet all of a sudden, 3 of my clients

have

SHINGLES and want me to help them cure or calm it down with what ever I

can

find for thier comfort.

My FIL had shingles a few months ago. I looked and found that Basil,

Lavender and Chamomile seemed to help. I made a few concoctions for him to

try. My DH tossed into the bag my muscle cream that I made which had

cassia, thyme, lavender and wintergreen and menthol crystals in it. He

tried the sprays that I made using the eo's for shingles and it did not help

at all. He tried my muscle cream, just because he saw that in the bag and

he said that gave him instant releif!! Whoda thunk?

I would use ravensara against the virus, and lavender and:or geranium to

heal the skin and against the itch and pain.

Hi Nikie,

I'm really not very surprised that your muscle cream helped--my MIL has

recurring shingles and for some messed-up reason she

put my joint rub (peppermint, eucalyptus, lavender, wintergreen, camphor and

others) on it and said it cleared up within a

week and quit stinging and hurting almost right away! I thought she was out of

her Barbara Bush-Lookalike mind for even

trying it! But if it works, I guess it's her shingles and I know them buggers

HURT!

My wild-butt guess at why it works is that menthol is a mild topical anasthetic,

lavender is said to be soothing on irritated

skin, and the wintergreen contains compounds similar to aspirin (I'm not a

chemist but I play one on TV), plus the carrier

oils for emollience?

I'd be interested in why this would seem to help shingles also.

Have a good one,

Serra

EOs you've heard about ... but how about St John's Wort macerated as a carrier

oil? Anything nerve-related it should be good for and it's said that the herpes

virus appears at nerve ending sites on the body with shingles. Jane

no, shingles are NOT something to mess around with.

A friend's hubby came down with shingles last summer, and as she worried 'cause

the

pills the doc prescribed just gave him a bad headache and no help, I looked

through

my files to see what other herbalists recommended. At the time I was pretty

busy and

couldn't come up with much, but since folks said St. John's Wort oil helped,

I grabbed some of that and brought it to him, explaining to dab it on topically.

A couple days later, I also brought over cayenne ointment I'd made, but he

refused it,

saying the SJW oil worked fine. I thought he was kidding, but he added that it

took about

20 minutes for it to work for him, and he could sure tell when it wore off; he

didn't

feel anything else was necessary for his shingles.

Maybe SJW tincture, internally for nerves, should also be considered, as well as

Lemon Balm (Melissa)

both externally and internally for the anti-viral effects. Fortunately I

haven't had shingles

myself to need to test any of these.

Kids can get chicken pox more than once, so it seems a person could also get

shingles more

than once. What a miserable ailment to deal with! I knew a 75 year old woman

years back

who got shingles (probably as the result of stress from her upcoming toe surgery

-- by the time

they realized her 'rash' wasn't a reaction to the pain meds, it was too late to

medicate to fight

off the shingles during those first hours). She would literally rip her clothes

off to get down to

bare skin so she could rub it and feel something other than the pain... Sure

wish I knew then

the different treatments I'd try today.

I've heard the Ravensara works as well; I've only

diffused it so far, along with Lemon Balm/Melissa, to

prevent outbreaks, and it certainly hasn't made them

worse... On the outbreaks themselves, I've used Lemon

Balm and/or Licorice tincture diluted in Aloe Vera

gel, with a drop or two of Melissa eo (depending on

the size of the jar I'm using), and 3 drops of Black

Pansy flower essence. This has actually helped me

prevent outbreaks after prodome as well. (Prodome is

the period of time when you feel the outbreak is

coming, but you haven't blistered yet. There can be

pain, itching, or greatly increased sensitivity to the

area.)

Just as with chicken pox, it's important to allow the

affected area to dry out. Keeping it moist with

lotions will alleviate the pain, but can prolong

healing. You want it to get crusted as quickly as

possible.

I wonder about the woman whose 15 y/o has " shingles " .

How long has this been going on? Are the outbreaks

always in the same spot, or do they move and expand?

Has the doctor actually taken a sample from one of the

outbreaks to send out for testing, or did he just look

at the infected area? Since it is a pediatrician

rather than a GP, I would imagine this doctor has not

seen very many cases of actual shingles. I am not a

doctor, nor do I wish to be, but it sounds more likely

that she has a herpes simplex outbreak on her body

rather than actual shingles (Herpes/Varicella Zoster).

Without having a sample tested, they look incredibly

similar to each other and are easy to confuse.

I have 4 " weird " , uncommon spots on my body that will

break out from time to time; one on my forearm, one on

my ankle, one on my outer thigh, and one on my face

(yep, on my face. That one broke out just in time for

the International Herbal Symposium this summer. I was

so pleased... blech.) They look just like shingles,

but they're not. It's herpes simplex. The doc said

it probably got spread to those areas in the shower;

for instance, I remember the one on my ankle showed up

shortly after an outbreak, and I had shaved, nicking

the skin and allowing the virus to enter there.

Regardless of the strain of the virus, Dr. Christopher

Scipio has done some fantastic work on the various

viruses in the herpes family, and I strongly recommend

his site: www.natropractica.com He's an herbalist

and homeopathic doctor, and makes his own herbal

products as well. His writings are heartfelt and hold

truth for me at a soul level. Plus, he's more than

happy to answer questions over email.

A friend from another list uses Penny's Tooth and Gum tincture

for cold sores, at first tingle. Says it nips it right in the bud.

I am actually getting some so I'll have it handy next time I get a

cold, in 2 years or so. My gums could use some help too,

though they are fine IF I remember to rub Sangre de Drago

on them.

I am a believer in L. Lysine. When I am under stress, I can count on cold sores

.. . . MULTIPLE. The L. Lysine can shorten the life span of the sores and if

taken regularly can really reduce how often I get them. So is it the alcohol in

the perfume/aftershave do the trick? What are your thoughts?

-Helen

I breed cats, and give them L.Lysine to contain outbreaks of Herpes - apparently

L.Lysine has the capacity to get inside the herpes virus spore, and inhibit it.

You are right, there is no cure once you are initially infected, but you can

control it.

Dear CHA,

Thanks for the posts on the subject.

I continued to go to work the past three days and the lesions spread to the

upper buttocks (right at GB 30) and back sacral and lumbar areas. When the

pain became too intense to sleep last night I practiced needling around the

inguinal (most intense and original) lesions. By the end of the day today I

fled work and received a nice treatment at a local (Natick, MA) clinic, where

e-stim was applied to four needles surrounding a major lesion with good result.

When I got home I practiced a kind of fighting fire with fire by stepping into

the shower and turning the dial hotter and hotter. I remember doing this when I

had poison oak as a kid. The heat of the water makes it feel as though you are

scratching and even better than scratching, indeed it is almost ecstatic. The

advantage over moxa for this purpose is that hot water gives no over-irritation

to the skin. When I stepped out of the shower the heat concentrations of the

lesions were nicely dissippated. Virtually unnoticeable. I'm taking LDXGT

and feeling at the moment rather smug.

At night, however, the shingles takes a darker turn, this time I'll be armed

with the e-stim and mantra practice. Whatever doesn't kill you . . .

Would the grains of high-grade moxa be used directly on the skin?

Thanks again, Carl

Hi Carl,

I can't say as I necessarily recommend this, but I got a case of shingles

when I was in school, and my classmate did 7-star hammering and cupping on

it (it was on my lower back/side). Needless to say it was exquisitely

tender, but it dried it up practically overnight. Our dermatology teacher

was mildly horrified (because of the contagion factor), but my classmate had

had chicken pox (and wore gloves, etc). I also took LDXGT. Interestingly,

it emerged in March in San Francisco, a week that was suddenly VERY hot

every day (after the usual damp winter there), and I had been going to yoga

class every day because it was spring break.

Hello-

I have had good success with grinding up long dan xie

gan tang pills, making a paste and applying to the

lesions. For post-herpetic neuralgia the a 50/50 mix

of caullophylum (Aka tamu oil) and Ravensare essential

oil is very effective.

good luck,

no doubt at all... ravensara aromatica, from Madagascar, dissolved in

Calophyllum inophyllum (sometimes called foraha or Tamanu)

up to about a 25% dilution.. (Kurt Schnaubelt recommends 50/50...but that's

more than necessary.)

Lemon balm and St John's wort in tea form would be my first thing. Both

of them could be used as a wash (in tea form - not in an oil) around the eye

too.

the most commonly recommended aromatherapy remedy for shingles is a strong

dilution of EITHER Ravensara aromatica OR Ravintsara diluted in Calophyllum

inophyllum (foraha or tamanu.) I've seen authorities recommend up to a

50/50 dilution. Around the eye I'd go a LOT lighter, and go with the

ravintsara, since it is milder and less irritating. We've had years of

really amazing feedback about the use of true ravensara...but in this case,

if it were MY shingle... I'd go with RavINTsara.

While I was working in the office of an 85-year-old MD, I was stunned to see

simple raw soy oil applied topically dry up shingles in short order. One can

only imagine how effective it would be with a few drops of ravensara (or

ravintsara, with which I'm not familiar) oil added to it.

My sister has a case affecting one of her eyes. She called and asked me if I

knew of a natural treatment.....I'm soooooooo not going there. Not with her

eyes. She does say its very painful and I dont know what to tell her. She can

take lysine orally and will but there doesn't seem to be much they can do other

than the herpes meds.....

She says its because she didn't take care of her contacts and would let them sit

out and use HER MOUTH to rehydrate them until she literally got someting on the

lens that scraped her eye.....now its something that comes back.....

You can get shingles anywhere and I have seen one case that left a lady who sold

organic herbs and oils with a huge scab between her eyes and it was a full year

before this looked healed and there is a very large indentation where that was.

I know she was in the pharmacy every week....worse case I ever saw.

Hi Theo,

Could you say what happened with your shingles in the end? I am interested.

Regards,

Gerry

{Herbal Remedies} shingles

i have shingles i hear its a reappearance of the chicken pox virus which comes

back not as bad, i dont know why its decided to appear itself now, weather lack

of sleep or not managing my veganism well i.e. not getting the right nutrients

but any remedies for this virus would be greatly appreciated

feel free to ask me questions about my situation that could help you understand

better so you can make a more informed decision on the best method of treatment.

ill log back on after college to reply to any at 5 so thanks in advance people

:D

Peace and Love

Theo
