I see the "9" and the "4" all the time in the produce departments here. The "9" codes are Organic and the "4" is your commercial, pesticide produce. I've not seen the "8" or the "3". Produce is marked with a number code that reveals what kind of produce you are buying. If there is a 5 number code starting in 9 it is organic. If there is a 5 number code starting in 8 it is genetically modified. If there is a 4 number code starting in 4 it is conventional. If there is a 4 number code starting in 3 it is irradiated. A couple of days ago at Whole Foods they had a beautiful shipment of large colorful "Fresh Rain Forest Grapes." The code was 4 numbers starting in 3 - they were irradiated. Guest guest Posted April 8, 2009 Report Share Posted April 8, 2009 I used to work in a grocery store, and I know for sure that the products that begin with 4 are regular produce grown with pesticides, and a 9 are organic. I have not seen a 3 or an 8, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. My worry is that they are hidden in the 4 group and we don't know it.
