Does anyone have any recomendations for dementia? A friend's mother is going through this. They took her to a doctor and he didn't even do any tests, just gave her meds. Don't know what she was given.

Thanks

Foundational essence deficiency. There are herbs and acupuncture points for this, although treatment can be difficult. Also needling can be hard if the dementia is severe, as the person must lay still for at least 20 minutes. There are some really good teas as well.

Dietary therapy is also important. I would recommend black beans, black chicken, black rice, black sesame, walnuts, red grapes, goji, shitake, sprouts, organic eggs, organic kidneys and liver (see if you can find an organic butcher.) Raspberries and raspberry tea.QiGong/yoga/Tai Chi are great as well.

There are many conditions that can mimic dementia. The first thing to look for is hypoglycemia, and just plain dehydration and malnutrition.

Some medications for type 2 diabetes can result in severe depletion.

dementia ...

i would have the person checked for a UTI [ unrinary tract infdection ] , as that in the beginning and before it becomes " aggravating " can cause confusion .

Hi,

just my thoughts, but as one who worked in a Dr.'s office, I would take her to another Dr. There are many medical conditions that can mimic dementia and they all should be ruled out through testing before making such a diagnosis. The biggest thing with the elderly is all the prescription medications they are on. I know from my Dad who went through the same thing. We took him to a holistic Dr. who prescribed a medication holiday for a weekend and wow, my Dad came back to us. I am not recommending this for your friend's mother, just giving you an example.

Hi Sage,

Is it possible for you to elaborate somewhat on what went on

during the medication weekend holiday that brought your Dad back? Herbals,

treatments, etc?

Many thanks,

Gerry

HI,

well it was several years ago. My Dad has since passed. I live in a different town so it was my sister that did most of the work. I remember the problem started with my Dad feeling tired, not sleeping well at night and depressed. Of course he was sent here and there and each Dr. put him on something not really paying attention to what he was already on. I know there were arthritis meds. celebrex and he was also taking motrin from a different Dr. and baby aspirin because a commercial said it was good for his heart. The culprits to the dementia though were that he was put on elavil. My Dad was already taking St. John's Wort on his own. The "dementia" really started when a Dr. put him on Zoloft. He was hallucinating, violent mood swings and developed tremors.

My sister just would not believe he was demented so I told her to go somewhere else. She took him to her Dr.

He wasn't on it that long so the Holistic Dr. just took him off it. Oh, he was also complaining of stomach pain(yeah, I hear your reaction). I remember the Dr. being strict with diet, fresh veges/fruit. I don't remember the actual foods as my sister did the cooking. Truthfully, as far as the weekend went, pulling him off those medications was the big thing. If we hadn't taken him to a Dr. that actually listened and thoroughly examined him,I do think he was headed for a serotonin crises. Oh, he was put on Aloe vera juice but I don't know for how long.

After, Dad had to walk everyday, he got involved in an arthritis swim program, oh and we got him a dog. He really didn't complain about the arthritis pain. I made up some herbal/ aromatherapy lotions. We did get blood work and the main problem was a low thyroid. He was put on thyroid medicine and seemed to be fine after that. I know I'm not remembering everything here, but the above seems to be the big things that stand out. I know that after all of this, Dad wasn't on meds. except for the thyroid. He took herbals here and there for his arthritis aches, and oh he was on hawthorn berry for the blood pressure. He did move in with my sister, so I know he was eating a lot of garlic.lol

I hope this answered your question.
