Guest guest
Dear Group, We have had the information below forwarded to us from two different reliable sources. With Doc gone we have not had the time to research it and see if it is actually legitimate. Could someone please check this out and give us all an update??? Thank you! Kelly Organic Solutions 888-898-9660 House and Senate bills to kill all organic farms (FAST track bills in 2 weeks) Food Safety Modernization Act (HR 875): Criminalization of Organic Farms Bills are: House H.R. 875 http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h111-875 Senate S 425 http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=s111-425 IF YOU LIKE A GARDEN OR BUY ORGANIC FOOD YOU BETTER GET ON THAT PHONE TO YOUR CONGRESS REP's N-O-W!!!! The few multi-million dollar companies in the farming industry would like nothing better than to eliminate any opposition with the support of the federal government. The Bills will require organic farms to use specific fertilizers and poisonous sprays. All farms and growers will be instructed and regulated by the newly formed agency to 'make sure there is no danger to the general public and the appending food supply.' The attempt is to 'standardize' the agricultural industry. At first this may appear as if it is only directed at commercial farms but don't be fooled. This WILL include backyard gardens that grow food for consumption by a single family and not intended for resale. Most prior Bills that started off with such intent are later expanded in their scope and become more restricted in nature. THIS IS DICTATORSHIP any way you look at it. Guest guest
Morning all! I have the bill in hand and have been reading it. Here is a link to a site that explains it fairly well in my opinion: http://shepardpolitics.blogspot.com/2009/03/hr-875-would-essentially-outlaw-family.html On this site you will see that he quotes number 14 of Section 3 - Definitions (14) FOOD PRODUCTION FACILITY- The term ‘food production facility’ means any farm, ranch, orchard, vineyard, aquaculture facility, or confined animal-feeding operation. It is a very broad definition. Another disturbing part in the same section is #7, the definition of a Category 3 Food Establishment: (7) CATEGORY 3 FOOD ESTABLISHMENT - The term 'category 3 food establishment' means a food establishment (other than a category 1 or category 2 establishment) that processes cooked, pasteurized, or otherwise ready-to-eat seafood or other animal products, fresh produce in ready-to-eat raw form, or other products that pose a risk of hazardous contamination. Someone skimming this definition would think that this has to do with processing seafood and animal products UNTIL you get to the last line. HR ( House Resolution) 875 has 39 co-sponsers was referred to committee in February .There has been no action on this in awhile but it IS poised for the "fast track" Go to - http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h111-875 to read the bill. Click on VIEW COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS then click on blue link to both commitees to find out the Reps on the committee and email or call them to voice your displeasure with this bill. Encourage them to read it in it's entirety or mainly: Section 3 - Definitions , number 14 and 7 Section 202 Section 205 , Category 3 These guys are busy so I figure if you point them to the sections that would place restrictions on Farmers Markets , small farmers and even home gardeners by nature of its too broad a wording and lack of exemptions for these folks ,, we may have a chance of stopping this. Call your Representative for good measure even though he/she may not be on the committee. S ( Senate) 425 has no co-sponsers and was also referred to committee in February . Go to : http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=s111-425 to read and follow procedure for finding the committee . I have not read all of this yet . I am just going to write to the Commitee members and my Senators and simply say that I do not want this bill passed unless there is protections for small farmers , markets etc. Hope this helps, Mary ostrowski Organic Solutions Thursday, March 26, 2009 8:43 AM herbal remedies {Herbal Remedies} Re: Urgent! Guest guest
This pretty much says it all. http://www.huntingtonnews.net/columns/090324-kinchen-columnsorganicfood.html If these bills are passed looks like good bye to the small farmer, good bye to heirloom seeds goodbye to having an organic personal garden. One more step to allowing our government to control our food supply- this is what Stalin did and he controlled the people by starving them into submission. !!!! Despite their desperate attempts to disguise these measures as to protecting the consumer, please take a look at whom they are actually protecting. I'd feel safter in a den full of hungry lions- at least their responses are honest. zoe Dear Group, We have had the information below forwarded to us from two different reliable sources. Guest guest
I am Canadian, but I have been doing my bit to spread awareness. We had quite a discussion on the topic on the Square Foot Gardening group. What it boils down to is that the language is vague, and in the future measures that are meant to regulate large industries could be imposed on small farms and kill them. There is much wild speculation about nefarious plots on the one hand, and ridicule of paranoia on the other. My response is that the fact you're paranoid doesn't mean no one is out to get you. And vice versa. Here is B.C. we have seen regulations come into force, apparently under pressure from The Empire to the South, that are killing the practice of small scale butchering, just now that the public is smartening up to the benefits of local grass-fed meat! The most sober balanced comments that I have seen were on the website of the Organic Consumers Association. http://www.organicconsumers.org Search the site for HR875.
