Guest guest
Absolutely it is not hearsay. Monsanto has been buying up heirloom and organic companies to the point that it is almost a monopoly not only in this county, but worldwide. There are, however, many good options. Most of these are small family or volunteer companies. I hope you are looking for heirloom organics, not just any organic. Hybrid seeds contain more risk in some was as do non-organic seeds, in my opinion. I use seeds that are both heirloom and organic or sustainably grown. There's a good list of these companies at www.greenpeople.org. My favorite sources include: Richters - www.richters.com (family-run Canadian company that ships worldwide and has excellent service & huge selection). Native Seed Search - www.nativeseeds.org - Dear to my heart because they specialize in traditionally Native American grown crops. Not always certified organic so check individual seed varieties for that. Seed Saver's Exchange, www.seedsavers.org (volunteer/membership seed exchange nonprofit dedicated to biodiversity. Members send seeds on request to other members for nominal cost. Huge annual catalog, Not all are organic, but quite a few are. Only problems are that members typically do not send huge quantities. Heirloom Seeds - (www.heirloomseeds.com Some heirloom only, some certified organic, clearly marked in catalog. Seeds of Change- www.seedsofchange.com Very good source of certified organic heirloom seed and excellent variety Baker Creek - www.RareSeeds.com - good variety Cook's Organic Seed - www.cooksgarden.com - best leafy greens selection Victory Heirloom Seeds - www.victoryseeds.com TomatoBob's - www.tomatobob.com - Not Just tomatoes Happy growing! Guest guest
I second the applause for Richter's. Their plants always survive the long trip from Ontario in great condition. People in the Pacific NorthWest might also enjoy Dan Jason's site: http://saltspringseeds.com Dan has been at this for a long time! I love his books and would buy all my seeds from him if he were in a different climate zone. He is on one of those balmy Gulf Islands and I am in the mountainous Interior, quite different. There is also Stellar Seeds nearby here. I got some from them, because they are (almost) local, but they are very expensive. This will definitely be the year I take seed saving seriously!
