So, here's the question...what is the shelf life of homemade tonics, tinctures, cordials? I made a tonic about 9 months ago that has brandy in it, and I have kept it in the refrigerator. Guest guest Posted March 16, 2009 Report Share Posted March 16, 2009 If you make your tinctures with alcohol or apple cider vinegar you can keep them for long periods without worry. We use vodga with the highest proof usually 90 to 100 proof but you can use higher proofs such as 151 or everclear but 80, 90, and 100 proof work fine. It makes some of the tinctures taste like a brandy of its own. Apple cider vinegar works fine but does have that vinegar taste which is rather strong. We have tinctures that are years old and are still just fine and do not have to be refrigerated. Never store in plastic. Glass is best. For teas and decotions just keep for short periods and use in a recent period and keep refrigerated to make last a little longer. They can spoil. There's a little sediment on the bottom, but it smells fine. It should still be fine, correct? Thank you so much for your input.
