Hello,

My daughter who is 6yrs old today had a nose bleed last night. This

is the second time this has happened. The first time was about one

year ago on an airplane. I was told that it was probably just the air

pressure and altitude. Last night however it happened just after she

went to bed. Does anyone know why this might have happened and is

there anything I should be doing? Thanks! ~gretchen

This does not sound like a real problem since she has only had two episodes and they were a year apart. You also did not say if they were severe, though it does not sound like it. Most people have nose bleeds because of a home that is too dry (not enough moisture in air) or if problematic, people can sometimes have veins that are too near the surface and need cauterized by an ENT. It is rare to need cauterized.

Blood disorders cause nose bleeding, but blood disorders have their own tell-tale signs and happen more often than twice a year. We have a daughter who has ITP (Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura) who went into remission in 1995 after almost 5 years of constant medical care and she had to be cauterized twice. Her nose bleeds would last 2-4 hours long and produced blood clots that could be up to 6-8" long that came out of her nose. ITP is life-threatening and we discovered it was genetic in 1998 when the doc who took care of her gained a $25,000 grant from the gov't and requested blood donations from every ITP child at the local Children's hospital where we went. This doc found that every blood sample from every ITP child had a mutation on the 6th Y chromosone and so this made it genetic. Trust me! When you have a 22 1/2 month old child who bleeds for 4 hours you are scared! She came close to having to have blood transfusions twice but we were able to avoid them (would have come from her dad had she needed one). Anyway, occasional nose bleeds are not a worry or concern unless they are excessive and long like what we experienced.

Many people lightly coat the inside of nose with something to moisturize the area, often petroleum jelly on a Q-Tip, but a very small amount of sweet almond oil or vitamin E oil would be best to use. Just a dab on a Q-tip and rubbed inside of nose to coat. Almond oil is superior to use over other oils as it is emollient and easily absorbable into the skin. Almond oil is most preferred by those who make their own skin products because of its superiority as an emollient. I have used sweet almond oil for many things from homemade soaps to homemade foot baths, beauty products and more. It is easily found in many grocery stores (cooking aisle where other cooking oils are sold) or health food stores. It is a little pricey (almost $10 for a pint) but has many uses.

Lori,

My son was actually having a lot of nose bleeds this winter. I

started having him put a small amount of sesame oil in his nostrils, as he is

17 and well…. I believe he only did it a few times, however he has had no more

nose bleeds since starting this. So, I would recommend trying the sesame oil

Then it was probably due to too dry of conditions. I am so glad he is doing well!
