Guest guest
It was that I could learn with my parents in the morning and work in the afternoon. I started a business when I was 11 with my parents lawn mower and made enough to by a boat & motor. Then I was selling fish and bringing them home for Mom to cook. The thing I most appreciated was that I was free to observe the world and learn from my own observations and that I was allowed to work when I was young. Being able to make money taught me how manners and how business relationships worked. I would have never learned anything of the real world in a class room. Now, when I talk with my generation I find that they are immature and uneducated. I feel that public school didn't prepare them at all for the world and this is another reason for me to be thankful that I was home schooled. A question parents could ask their kids is what does government education really teach our youth? The answer you will probably hear is " not much, they just want us to pass the test so they give us the answers before we do the test. " or " Our school doesn't really teach us anything; they only care about how many of us pass the test as their funding depends upon statics alone. " or " They do teach us that we are ruled by government and since they put up the fence and tripled the cops on campus it really does feel like a prison. " It is well known that public school is the place where kids can obtain every kind of drug. From crack cocaine to ecstasy and cough medicine to heroin. The worst are mind altering drugs that are sold out of lockers and the education kids teach each other like " dude you can get high if you inhale that can of air " or " watch me make a bong out of this Avocado " or " the only way we can be secure is if we have numbers and join or start a gang. " Public school teaches our kids to be criminals and prepares them for prison. The question is still the same. " What does government education teach our youth? Promiscuity, laziness, drug education, fear of law enforcement, no production and lack of enthusiasm to start life as an adult appear to be a few but ask a kid for a more local report on your nearest public school. We will never send our daughter to a public school even if it means leaving the land of the free and the home of the brave. We will teach her so she will survive in this world and not waste her youth learning garbage. ~21 year old parent On Fri, 2009-01-02 at 20:53 +0000, Lori wrote: Hi Bryan, I love being a homeschoolmom and almost every homeschooler I have ever met love the fact they they homeschooled, my kids included. Guest guest
When my son was about 5 he leaned out of a cart in the store one day, looked at some obscure productand read the label on the bottle. I was astounded.. as he wasn't just immitating a tv logo but reading it. We took a month and I taught him to read. After that our first book was Tolkeins "the Hobit" in full length... He read half and I read half. he was very good.. at reading and comprehension.. I took my son out of the public school system in Oregon during his sixth grade year. The school was a disaster in terms of controlling the kids behaviors, creating physical safety, and failing to adequately punish severe bullying. We worked together at home/library for 4 years. I never had a schedule to speak of, or a syllabus. What we did have was a list of subjects, ranging from english/literature, history, science, math, and fitness. We generally would take a topic and focus on it for 3 to 4 hours or so at a time. My approach was to teach BOTH facts and concepts. Each depends upon the other. Beyond that, I spent a lot of energy teaching my son how to think. I would show him a statement, and ask him... "what is this saying? Is it implying anything?does it lead you subtly or overtly to form a conclusion without your being fully informed by maneuvering your emotions?" We talked about how to think through problems and how to find resources for learning new things. After 4 years, he had had enough of dad... and wanted to socialize at school again. I put him back in the public High School where he did fine. To be fair, the high school was run more responsibly. the schools were pushing a lot of garbage that I wanted him to be free of. He is now nearly 21 and an extremely bright young man who is well respected, hard working, and in the U. S. Military. I am proud of him. Guest guest
Kudos to you and your parents. I think what it comes down to is the ability of the parent to trust the child to learn what he/she needs to learn to live. Our society makes us think that ONLY the experts know how to educate our children, and that all education should look like government education. I for one was so afraid to step outside that box and start the process of trusting myself to be the expert on my own children, and to trust my children to know what they needed to learn when they needed to learn it. What a world that opened up to me when we made that decision to start the journey of educating outside the box!!! What wonderful, wise women I met that mentored me and encouraged me to learn, learn, learn. It is SO wonderful to hear from the next generation that they have NOT just accepted the status quo and are forging on " outside the box " . You are truly blessed. Guest guest
I believe the first book I read was the hobbit. I remember that I could not read until I was eight. I had no interest and it seemed so important to everyone else so naturally I resisted. The thing that made me read was that my Dad started reading stories aloud. He read me the entire Lord of the Rings and several other fat books. When I was Eight I picked up ' The Hobbit' and read it. Everyones jaw droped. Then I went book crazy and I still can't stop reading. I still love a good story but I read a lot of old history books and anything printed before 1950 when psych/ shrink data started. Can't believe that no one taught me how to read. I got interested and just read it. Guest guest
Hi What about I have trouble defining words I don't know even with the websters young readers dictionary. Did you not have to look up any words. I realize when I do look up a word even if I thought I knew it I find that I didn't and get overwhelmed trying to define it even thogh I've read how to clear a word. This has been a real problem for me for a very long time. I feel confused and crushed by what I have read because I read past the mu's because when i try to clear them I get overwhelmed ie word chains and all those definitions. So I prefer other activities. The thing I most appreciated was that I was free to observe the world and learn from my own observations and that I was allowed to work when I was young. Now, when I talk with my generation I find that they are immature and uneducated. I feel that public school didn't prepare them at all for the world and this is another reason for me to be thankful that I was home schooled.A question parents could ask their kids is what does government education really teach our youth? The answer you will probably hear is "not much, they just want us to pass the test so they give us the answers before we do the test." or "Our school doesn't really teach us anything; they only care about how many of us pass the test as their funding depends upon statics alone." or "They do teach us that we are ruled by government and since they put up the fence and tripled the cops on campus it really does feel like a prison." It is well known that public school is the place where kids can obtain every kind of drug. From crack cocaine to ecstasy and cough medicine to heroin. The worst are mind altering drugs that are sold out of lockers and the education kids teach each other like "dude you can get high if you inhale that can of air" or "watch me make a bong out of this Avocado" or "the only way we can be secure is if we have numbers and join or start a gang." Public school teaches our kids to be criminals and prepares them for prison. Guest guest
Ah yes! Defining words can be rough but is the key to learning what books have to teach. Not so long ago when I was in India I was with a group that was passing out Way to Happiness booklets. I must have passed out ten thousand in an hour but I was told not to throw the written word as it was too important. A man yelled at me and told me never to throw or toss a book as words on paper were to be treated with respect and that the life works of long dead wise-man could be learned from its pages. One can read words but if one does not understand the meaning of the words one might just as well be reading a book in Gaelic or Arabic. = No understanding. Books can teach you amazing words and once you have full understanding of a word you can use it in your communications. This gives you the power to say what you wish. Vocabulary is priceless, communication is vital to our survival. ~B On Wed, 2009-01-07 at 16:20 -0800, kevin mcgarvey wrote: Hi What about I have trouble defining words I don't know even with the websters young readers dictionary. Best ~B On Mon, Michael wrote: When my son was about 5 he leaned out of a cart in the store one day, looked at some obscure productand read the label on the bottle.
