Guest guest
I have thrush. That yeast infection on my tongue. I had a Steroid injection in my back a month ago, and also antibiotics 2 wks ago (Z pack). Does this mean my immune system is way down? I'm scared for some reason. I've always thought of thrush in association with severe illness or compromised immune systems. What is going on and what do I need to do? Is there anything over the counter? Food? Any help is very appreciated. Kristen
Guest guest
I don't know that you need to be scared about the yeast - the fact that you have a condition requiring steroid injections and antibiotics would be much more alarming to me. You might benefit from natural treatment for the conditions those are treating. On to the thrush. Candida yeast is normally present in small amounts in a healthy body, and is consumed by the beneficial bacteria your system needs. An overgrowth of candida in any warm, moist body part, such as your mouth, is a fairly typical reaction to antibiotic treatment or steroid treatment, because these kill off the good bacteria and allow excess yeast to grow. That's most likely why you have it and that's why you associate it with serious medical problems - it's not because the thrush is causing a problem or will cause a problem, it's because people who get it often are being. treated for a serious disease with large doses of antibiotics or steroids. You do want to get the yeast back under control. I'll leave it to the professional herbalists on this list to prescribe herbal treatments (there are some), but one easily available and inexpensive dietary treatment is to eat yogurt, preferably unflavored whole milk yogurt (and goat's milk would be best). There are also some foods you should avoid as they encourage yeast such as bread or wheat flour products, and large quantities of fruit. Guest guest
i've gotten thrush before when i had taken too many antibiotics, trying to rid of a sinus infection. Your body is stripped of all its natural bacteria. You need to eat yogurt and/or drink milk with live acidophilus. Usually you can feel the bacteria tingling on your tongue when you eat it... that's a good thing. I know its scary, but it really isnt that unusual, especially if you been using antibiotics to fight off an infection. Good luck.. take care, michelle "Michelle" --- On Sun, 12/14/08, kristen.cook <kristen.cook wrote: kristen.cook <kristen.cook{Herbal Remedies} Please help... Guest guest
Also, acidophilus, (I may have spelled that wrong) helps rejuvinate the good bacteria in your system.Trina --- On Mon, 12/15/08, michelle grayless <michelle_cows wrote: michelle grayless <michelle_cowsRe: {Herbal Remedies} Please help... Guest guest
The steroid injections are for a herniated disk and inflammation in the facet joints. Is there something I can do naturally for that? Let me know b/c I will be all over it The antibiotic was for sinus infection. So, separate situations. I would LOVE to know if there is anything natural to do for my back problem. Please advise if you have the knowledge to share. Thank you guys so much for your help. Guest guest
I can only tell you what works for me. I do not have exactly the same diagnosis as you, but I suspect our issues are similar for different reasons. Over 30 years ago I was in a serious auto accident that literally ripped five transverse processes from my lumbar vertebrae. A good bit of muscle, ligament and nerve damage occurred as well. Dreadful as that sounds, I wasn't particularly crippled by it. I was back on my feet within about 5 days (and was unconscious the first three of those -- there was a pretty nasty concussion as well). I couldn't run for a couple of years due to sciatic pain, and sitting for more than an hour or so caused terrible spasms. But I was fortunate. My insurance company assigned me to an orthopedist who was also the team doctor for the NC State football team. He understood when I told him I hated the muscle relaxers and wouldn't take them. He warned me that while I was not limited by my injuries in terms of what I could and could not do in life, I WOULD develop arthritis there as I got into my forties. He was right about the arthritis, but I managed to stave it off until I was over 50. He suggested things (that I later learned were strategies team doctors used for getting injured players back on the field) I could do to minimize later consequences. I followed his advice for weight training (in the 1970s, finding a serious gym for women was not simple) strengthening back and abdominal muscles, which made matters less dire, and I learned as much as I could about preventing and easing the pain of arthritis. What works for me: Regular doses of a tea I make with alfalfa and burdock (to prevent or slow the progression of arthritis), yellow root (helps fight inflammation), lemon balm and passion flower (helps relax muscles), and St. John's Wort (I am convinced this helped regenerate damaged nerves). There's also dandelion, yarrow, and hawthorne in it, but that's for other reasons. I sometimes put in willow bark, which is a pain reliever with properties similar to aspirin. When my back feels a little sore, I use a liniment I made up of horse chestnut extract and diluted clove, ginger, wintergreen, lavender and grapefruit essential oils. Also, I do yoga and tai chi exercise, and still have a weight-lifting regimen (if you try this, get into a gym with a competent trainer who will teach you proper form, whether with free weights or machines, and always have a spotter if you're using free weights). Before I moved, I had a hot tub with jacuzzi jets. Those are WONDERFUL and give several hours of relief. I don't have the tub now, but when we redid our current home, we put in a shower system (I found it very inexpensively on ebay) that has six massage jets on it. It's not as generally relaxing as sitting 20 minutes up to your neck in hot water, but the jets work every bit as well. And when its rainy and cold, or I've exerted myself a lot, I sleep with a hot pad on my back. Once in a rare while, I will fall back on ibuprofen, but I only very rarely feel that bad. For sinus congestion, I use lavender, peppermint, and eucalyptus essential oils in a vaporizer. Not sure what Doc or Bryan will make of all this. I'm hoping to see some suggestions from them that might be of value to me, as well. What I'm doing works for me NOW, but things change, and I am always eager to learn more strategies. --- On Mon, 12/15/08, kristen cook <kristen.cook wrote: > kristen cook <kristen.cook > Re: {Herbal Remedies} Please help...
