If you use so called folk method of tincture preparation the easiest menstruum to obtain is 80-proof or 100-proof vodka. 80-proof vodka is approximately 40% alcohol by volume while 100-proof vodka is approximately 50% alcohol by volume. Many say that twenty to thirty percent alcohol is sufficient to preserve the tincture which means that both 80-proof and 100-proof vodka are adequate. When using dry plants, 80-proof and 100-proof vodka is suitable. When using fresh plants because of the fresh juices being used, 100-proof vodka may be more judicious, but 190-proof Everclear would be most efficient. You want it to be around 100proof when your done diluting it with distilled water.
