Guest guest
AMEN, finally someone who " sees " this made up " thing " as I do. The hell I went through with my son (he's 20 now). I never did put him on " their " meds, I kept telling his teachers, etc there was nothing wrong with him, I had one teacher DEMAND that I put my son on medicine, I asked her " When did you get your medical degree? " I always said " doping " up my son was against my beliefs. Also when my son was about 10 (that summer), I went to all different kinds of places that kids go, like parks, etc. & watched the kids, I saw no difference between my son & ALL the other kids. I also always asked this question; " Have you ever watched nature shows?, Did you see how all the young acts? " That always shut them up. While my son was growing up, I would limit his sugar intake, among other things. He is now a VERY healthy (body & brain) young man. Guest guest
All you have to do is follow the money trail for the ADD and ADHD diagnoses. The schools get a lot of money for a diagnosed child. That is why teachers and school administrators became " doctors " and diagnosed students, which of course, is against the law. It is sad, sad, sad, especially since they don't know what the effects of ritalin are 20 years down the road. None of my children were ever told they had to be on Ritalin, but that may have had to do with the fact that I pulled them out of public school 13 years ago and never looked back. We have been happpily unschooling, and what an adventure it has been outside the box :-). At 08:51 PM 11/11/2008, you wrote: AMEN, finally someone who " sees " this made up " thing " as I do. Guest guest
I have not heard of internet based home schooling. Some years ago, I did come across an entire curriculum on cds . It was called the Robinson Curriculum... about 20 cds for around 200 to 300 dollars for quite a few years of schooling . You only needed to add a math book to it... I think you could find a Robinson curriculum used on the net at a fair price... if you look around... They contained a lot of classical literature and history no longer under copyright law protection... I looked around a bit for you on the net,and hope the info below is helpful...MikeHomeschool Curriculum Excellence An Excellent K-12 Home School Curriculum Developed by a scientist and his six children Teach your children to teach ...www.robinsoncurriculum.com/ - Education: The three most compelling reasons to buy A² are education, education and education. There is no reason to purchase a curriculum unless your children will thrive academically on it. Many of our users report that their children are advancing up to two grade levels each and every year. Our methods teach children how to learn, not just to memorize facts. Most of our materials were first published long before political correctness was conceived so they are untouched by current fads and revisionist history, etc. Ease of use: A² is very easy to use. If you can navigate a simple web site, you can use A² Curriculum. A² is a huge web site resident on a CD so no internet connection is required. Just click and print the text book. That is all there is to using A², in fact many families assign the duties of printing the materials to their children. Almost all the files on the A² CD are either html, text, or pdf files, the most common and easiest to use file types on the web. Recently we called a family to provide technical support. A delightful twelve year old young lady explained the problem she was encountering, and followed the instructions perfectly as we resolved the problem. This twelve year old girl was using A² to educate her younger brother while their single mother was at work. Organization: Everything is laid out for you with a complete scope and sequence providing a clear road map for your homeschool. Everything is organized by grade level and by subject. Value: Homeschool curriculum is expensive. Curriculum costs hundreds of dollars, per child, each and every year. It can cost $300 for a single course for a year. A² covers kindergarten through 12th grade. It only costs $99 and the whole family can use it for no additional cost. This means that A² only costs $7.70 per year. That cannot be beat. Workload: Many products require extensive work on the part of parents; preparation, lesson plans, record keeping, correcting papers and worksheets. Some of this is impossible to avoid; however, A² has minimized the work to an amazing degree without compromizing your child's education. Using our methods and materials eliminates the need for lesson plans. Correcting papers and worksheets cannot be avoided; however, our methods almost (but not quite) make this a thing of the past. We do this by making children responsible for their own education. Support: When you buy A² you are not on your own. We operate a user group with hundreds of others who also use A². They are wonderful. These good people are available to answer a host of questions. Thousands of messages are in our archives, available to be searched and referenced. You also get the home phone number of the creator of A². When you require personal technical support or just a little hand holding; it is as close as your telephone. Quality: Many of our text books were in common usage in the 1800's. In those days schools were run by parents, and schools had very limited financial resources. Teachers frequently only had an eighth grade education. The books they used had to work and work well. The books had to be simple enough for these teachers to use and the principles they taught had to be self evident. Can old books possibly be as good as modern text book? The answer is a resounding YES! Nouns and verbs have not changed in several life times. Algebra and geometry are unchanged. History books written close the the events are frequently more accurate than those written years later. Unique Content: You may have heard that A² contains many public domain texts available for free on the Internet. This is true. These free materials are not ready to print and may require a high speed Internet connection to download. If these materials are printed without being properly formatted they will waste paper, creating unnecessary cost. The public domain materials that form the core of A² are formatted and ready to print, saving you time and money. Many of the materials contained in A² are unique and are not public domain. Our phonics materials, grammar game, math worksheet generator, math text, and many other materials are either not public domain or are not readily available elsewhere. A²: often imitated, but never duplicated. Education! The object and design of education is Liberty! We teach morality so they will be free from vice. We teach literacy so they will be free from ignorance. We teach economics to free them from financial bondage --- On Sat, 11/15/08, Frederique Nault <feenault wrote: Frederique Nault <feenaultRe: {Herbal Remedies} Re: More on the Psychs - The Myth & The Mysteryherbal remedies Date: Saturday, November 15, 2008, 6:24 AM On the subject of home schooling, does anyone have any information on internet schooling? Guest guest
Dear Michael, Thanks for recommending Robinson. It DOES look like a great program. The only addition I'd recommend at this time without getting deeper into the program is the purchase of: "The New Oxford American Dictionary". Sometimes the various Websters editions get infiltrated by the Psychs and their agenda. Also, the above Oxford also comes with a CD that works with most word processors on your PC. A great tool I use all the time. Yours in Knowledge, Health and Freedom, Doc Michael traster wrote: I have not heard of internet based home schooling. Guest guest
Hi Doc, You are most welcome. I hope that Robinson is found to be a good learning system for knowledge and character building. On the dictionary, absolutely. There is nothing like an older dictionary or a new one not poisoned with socio political agendas... which render definitions not only worthless, but destructively misleading. ..................................................................... On that note, I create words and phrases from time to time, and have in our current atmosphere sadly felt the need to create two in this past year. 1. Economic Treason... the extreme intentional misuse and waste of public trust and funds and the immoral enrichment of ones self and friends with those funds either directly or indirectly 2.Pres-sedition: An impeachable offense against the people of the United States, This is the seditious plan, plot or intent to use direct permit, tolerate, or inspire, or actual use of political influence to by pass or attenuate the peoples current constitutional rights by a president or the intent to undermine those rights through order, committee, judicial abuse, appointment, judicial appointment, or other means. so such an act or acts would be pres-seditious by one or more members of congress it would be congress-seditious Mike --- On Sun, 11/16/08, Doc <DocShillington wrote: Doc <DocShillingtonRe: {Herbal Remedies} Re: More on the Psychs - The Myth & The Mysteryherbal remedies Date: Sunday, November 16, 2008, 8:24 AM Dear Michael,Thanks for recommending Robinson. It DOES look like a great program. The only addition I'd recommend at this time without getting deeper into the program is the purchase of:"The New Oxford American Dictionary".Sometimes the various Websters editions get infiltrated by the Psychs and their agenda. Also, the above Oxford also comes with a CD that works with most word processors on your PC.A great tool I use all the time.Yours in Knowledge, Health and Freedom,DocMichael traster wrote: I have not heard of internet based home schooling. Guest guest
Hi, I have been homeschooling for over 16 years so I guess that makes me a veteran. There are public schools online, but I have never heard of homeschooling online. Many people confuse the two. If you use a K-12 public school-based curricula online then you are still a public-schooled student and muist answer to the school and their demands. This is NOT homeschooling, it is public school at home. It is important that these differences be made so that homechooling rights cannot be further eroded by this dileanation of terms. I do not know what state you are in, but you can go to Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), regardless of whether you agree with them spiritually or politically as they have all 50 state laws on their site and you can also keep up with any legislation in your state on this site without having to join their program. We have never belonged to HSLDA but I have taken advantage of the information posted there. You can also go to your local public library and ask them if they have a list of local homeschool groups in your area. Many homeschool groups, both secular and religious, list with the local library so that librarians can pass this information on to patrons who call in and ask. You can also look online for the large state group in your state (I live in Ohio so I would look for Ohio Home School Association and see what pops up). Ask around! Most people today know of one or more families who homeschool and they can give you the information for your state on how to homeschool legally. I highly suggest you do not allow your son to just quit school. Find out how to legally opt him out in your state (do NOT rely on the school for this information as they are often not in the know and ask for way more info than you are required by law to give!) so that he will not be labeled a "drop out". Instead, get your paperwork in order (it can take one day if you have the right person helping you), take it to the local Board of Education (if this is protocol in your state) and you will be legal for homechooling. Some states only require that you notify the school in writing. Others insist you send in paperwork. Some will continue to make him take standardized tests. Some states make you keep detailed logs. Others don't ever want to hear from you again. So it is important to find out the law and follow it so you do not end up in legal hell with your state (truancy laws). We have always been "relaxed" homeschoolers (http://www.homeeducator.com/FamilyTimes/articles/11-4article8.htm) who naturally fell into the unschooling (http://www.unschooling.com/) lifestyle over time and as our kids began to grow up some (teen years). There are many ways to homeschool and this site will give you a quick overview of each one: http://www.homeschool.com/Approaches/. There are also many books on homeschooling at the library that you can take out and read for free. I highly suggest "Homeschooling For Excellence", by David and Micki Colfax, even though it was published in 1983 (http://www.learningfamily.net/library/400/470-0446389862.htm). Any book by John Taylor Gatto (http://www.johntaylorgatto.com/bookstore/dumbdnblum1.htm), and "The Teenage Liberation Handbook" (How To Drop Out Of School And Get A Real Life And Education), by Grace Llewellyn (very secular but has some great wisdom). http://distancelearn.about.com/od/virtualhighschools/gr/TeenageLib.htm If your son is 16, he should have the basic foundation for all of his current and future educational needs (http://www.robinsoncurriculum.com/). He knows how to write reports, find information, read, write, cipher, and you will have to see what you think he really needs at this age. He most likely will find his strengths and interests and will excel in those areas (if he hasn't already) and will amaze you at his abilities and capabilites in these areas. And every kid grows and gains great experience, life skills, and enhances their education just by working. A job does more to grow them intellectually and in real life than any other endeavor, including school. And if your son wants to go to college one day here are colleges who will admit him if he met their real criteria (no diploma): http://learninfreedom.org/colleges_4_hmsc.html I have eight kids, four of whom we homeschooled all through school (actually one is 16 1/2 and is still enrolled), but all have had a great experience and all are intelligent and educated in their own right. My kids have never "done" school like their peers, never took tests other than an occasional spelling test that they requested for themselves, and are not "standardized" (I do not want standardized, cookie-cutter kids). Do my kids know everything their peers know? No. Do my kids' peers know everything my kids know? No. Each one of my kids are individual and have their own educations that fit exactly who they are. And each one is an amazing and awesome person in their own right. I never cared if my kids could "keep up" with their public-schooled peers, I just wanted my kids to be educated and to excel in their own God-given strengths. I have not been disappointed. Find what fits you and your son best (both yours and his expectations and needs), then go out on your own and live life to its fullest as a family. That is the freedom of homeschooling. You are not bogged down with someone else's ideals for your young adult or your family. If you want to incorporate something into your child's learning that is not on the state mandated curriculum you have that choice. If you want to follow the state curriculum, that is your choice. My kids can make change from a monetary transaction in their head (most of their peers cannot!), have and keep their own checkbooks (from age 16 up), go to work at age 15, begin to handle much of their own needs from the time they begin to work so that they will be ready to transition into adulthood by age 18, and pay and keep track of their own bills (car payments even though in mine or my husband's names because of interest and credit histories, insurance payments on cars, their own gasoline consumption, most of their own personal care products, half of their clothing at age 15 and all of it by age 17, and so on), and they have grown up to be responsible and savvy consumers with good credit histories and knowledge of what it means to live in the "Real World". In other words, they are not infantalized and dependent like so many of their peers who can't cook, keep a checkbook, or like some who have never held a job though they are 18-19 years old! My kids were more than ready to take the reigns of their lives by age 18. I also gave my kids their own diplomas from our homeschool that I make up on the computer. We have always been registered with the local schools (legal) and since we are like a private school I have taken the liberty to do this. Most employers accept them. They may not be "accredited" with the state, but we can prove that my kids went the required length of time, was seen by a certified teacher (portfolio reviews every year), and followed the law all through school. My kids had zero to do with the local schools except when they went to a program with one of their friends (extra-curricular such as plays or football games). Homeschoolers can even go to the Prom or Homecoming if they are invited by one of their friends and go as their guest. I am not telling you how to live. I am telling you a bit of my own experiences and what has worked for our family. Every family is different and has their own expectations and needs. Real freedom includes freedom to choose our own educational needs and choices for our own families. It is not forced on a populace through compulsory schooling laws. And notice it is compulsory schooling (training) and not compulsory education laws! Big difference. Okay, I am off of my soap box for now! (lol) Hope I have given you the information you sought and some things to ponder over. If you do live in Ohio and want some help, please feel free to contact me (homeschoolmom42). Guest guest
Some cool sites to check out for homeschooling: Switched-On-Schoolhouse -- http://www.aophomeschooling.com/switched- on-schoolhouse/overview.php. You can buy the CDs and be the teacher yourself (works for multiple kids but have to buy each grade level and class) or you can choose the online option where they have a teacher who assigns and grades and does most of that for you. The first option is about $300 per grade level for 5 classes (but disks can be reused for each kid when they reach that level). The second is over $1000 per student per year if I remember right. But it lets them do a lot on their own, and its fun. I never had trouble getting him to " go to school " . He did this for 4th grade. We only stopped because the program was a little buggy (not too bad and their support desk is pretty helpful) and we had found a few other things we want to try. Time 4 Learning - www.time4learning.com - this says it is a full curriculum but I dont think I would use it for that. But its really good for filling in some gaps and for " bridging " over the summer so he doesnt feel like he is going to school too much but he doesnt forget everything over those 3 months. I start him in a grade level or two behind what he is to make sure he can fly through it easily. Its also pretty cheap - $20/month, and you can pause it for a few months or cancel. I have been using it during the summers mostly, and during the school year if we seem to have extra time. Its great for filling in history/social studies, or reinforcing science or math concepts. I wouldnt use it for a primary teaching tool really, but for extra practice and reading it really is good. And its fun so not hard to get him interested. Aleks math - www.aleks.com - he has done his math through this site for 2 years now. Its pretty good for independent learning, and we like having the pie chart pieces fill in. It makes sure he masters something before he can move on. Assessments once a month may mean he gets set back and has to re-earn his pie pieces, but sometimes he gets to skip a few sections too. 3dLearn - www.3dlearn.com - this is the school we settled on as a " permanent " school that I can see him going to all the way through High School. It is an accredited online private school. We are on our second year here. Its more expensive than I would like (~$2500/year for middle school) but still cheaper than any local private school. He LOVES it. Basically he goes to school every day in a video game. I thought it wouldnt really teach much, and there are a few things I wish they would do different, but he learns a WHOLE lot more than I imagined. And he can build 3d worlds like he's been doing it all his life (he just turned 12!). I am a computer programmer and he is doing object oriented programming for real! The school is " live " which is what I really like - he gets to make friends and have social interactions with no threat of bullying. There are kids who go there because they are athletes (gymnasts, etc) and cant go to regular schools. One kid in his class this year is living in Hong Kong for a few years with his parents and they didnt want to send him to a local school. They have a live chat conference 3 days a week, have study hall requirements daily, community service and PE requirements (you have to fill out form attesting they have completed). They do basically unit studies - the reading and science and social studies are all wrapped up on a common subject or book. He read 12 full novels last year (the kid doesnt like reading anything but video game manuals) - some really more complex than I expected (OCtober Sky, The Giver, Dr Franklin's Island, etc). I actually loved the books myself - we spent a lot of time reading them at night together. They do a lot of projects, etc. Its really a cool place - I wish they had something like that when I was in school!!! If, by some chance, you actually decide to try it out let me know - I can sign up as an affiliate and get some off my tuition! I havent tried that yet, but every bit helps! They use Aleks math for middle school. High school math is taught though. Cosmeo - www.cosmeo.com - a great supplemental website - lots of video clips on every topic. Its by the same people as unitedstreaming.com, the place where most schools get their video clips used in classrooms. Its about $100/year (up to 5 kids accounts, can save favorites, etcc). But be aware - they auto-charge your account yearly if you dont cancel before the renewal date. Easy to forget about after a year! Spelling Time - www.spellingtime.com - We havent actually tried this. I think he is just over the age for it to be the most useful. I have reviewed the site a few times and want to do it and talk myself out of it. They have a few sister sites for learning the state capitals, etc. Kaplan - http://www.kaplancollegepreparatory.com/middle/index.html - they have some elementary and middle school online options. It goes by states and is PUBLIC. In missouri, its MOVIP - http://www.movip6- 12.org/index.learn. THis is a state funded public school that is actually considered advanced. He is taking two middle school electtives this semester and we are feeling it! I felt he needed reinforcement in grammer and reading so that's what we are taking. They are definitely not " easy " classes. And missouri has Kindergarten through HS online, as a public school. If you register early you can get the statefunded slots which means it is FREE. You can use full time or just for a class or two. I know they have in other states, but not sure about CA. Anyway, these are some of the sites I have come across after many, many, many hours of searching and lots of failed attempts. My situation is unique - one kid, doing " school at home " instead of " homeschooling " and basically self-teaching (which is why I originally looked into the Robinson curriculum). He stays home with his grandpa all day (who does nothing but be in the house with him). At night I type up a list of things he has to check off the next day for each class, conference, and chores (clean room, brush teeth etc). I know he is learning more than at regular schools. I took him to sylvan before enrolling him in the 6th grade at 3dLearn because I wanted him tested to be sure he was ready for 6th grade thinking maybe I should put him in 5th. He tested way above grade level in both reading and math (WAY above in math). I havent had him tested again, but he's always surprising me. herbal remedies , Frederique Nault <feenault wrote: > > On the subject of home schooling, does anyone have any information on internet schooling? Guest guest
Dear Lori, Thanks for taking the time to write all that. You are to be very highly commended for what you have done with your children, and I admire you tremendously for having the guts to do what YOU KNOW is right. Others try to turn this into a religious statement, or attempt to push some other religious, ethnic or political agenda, but your approach is based on FREEDOM and allowing the child to learn and think for themselves. This is awesome. When you teach someone to actually study, look, and research for themselves, you are so far ahead of the game. This way a child forms his own conclusions, and will have his own certainty about what is right and wrong. That and living life, and observing what is around one, gives one an education. If one takes the time to truly observe what they are looking at, and take care to observe what they are observing, they will develop themselves into a superior, valuable, responsible, and contributing member of society. Yours in Knowledge, Health and Freedom, Doc Lori Smith wrote: Hi, I have been homeschooling for over 16 years so I guess that makes me a veteran. The schools get a lot of money for a diagnosed child. That is why teachers and school administrators became "doctors" and diagnosed students, which of course, is against the law. It is sad, sad, sad, especially since they don't know what the effects of ritalin are 20 years down the road. None of my children were ever told they had to be on Ritalin, but that may have had to do with the fact that I pulled them out of public school 13 years ago and never looked back. On the dictionary, absolutely. There is nothing like an older dictionary or a new one not poisoned with socio political agendas... which render definitions not only worthless, but destructively misleading. ............. ......... ......... ......... ......... ......... ......... .. On that note, I create words and phrases from time to time, and have in our current atmosphere sadly felt the need to create two in this past year. 1. Economic Treason... the extreme intentional misuse and waste of public trust and funds and the immoral enrichment of ones self and friends with those funds either directly or indirectly 2.Pres-sedition: An impeachable offense against the people of the United States, This is the seditious plan, plot or intent to use direct permit, tolerate, or inspire, or actual use of political influence to by pass or attenuate the peoples current constitutional rights by a president or the intent to undermine those rights through order, committee, judicial abuse, appointment, judicial appointment, or other means. so such an act or acts would be pres-seditious by one or more members of congress it would be congress-seditious Mike --- On Sun, 11/16/08, Doc <DocShillington@ Knology.net> wrote: Doc <DocShillington@ Knology.net>Re: {Herbal Remedies} Re: More on the Psychs - The Myth & The Mysteryherbal remediesSunday, November 16, 2008, 8:24 AM Dear Michael,Thanks for recommending Robinson. Some years ago, I did come across an entire curriculum on cds . It was called the Robinson Curriculum.. . about 20 cds for around 200 to 300 dollars for quite a few years of schooling . You only needed to add a math book to it... I think you could find a Robinson curriculum used on the net at a fair price... if you look around... They contained a lot of classical literature and history no longer under copyright law protection.. .
