Would appreciate advice regarding treatment of lymphadema (edema due

to malfunction of lymphatic drainage). Does anyone know if

acupuncture and herbs can actually cure this or just improve it?

Also, which formula would you recommend?

Details: Female age 47 has had lymphadema (swelling) of left leg and

foot for many years. (She thinks it is connected to being stuck with a

stick in her foot at age 12; however, it can be hereditary). Past 6

months, right foot is beginning to swell, too.

Background: Pt is kidney deficient (weak Ki pulses, allergies,

bladder prolapse surgery in '06); no cold signs, however. She runs

warm; pulse is slightly rapid; front pulses slippery/wiry, Spleen

moderate, Liver thin. Tongue is a tad pale, some teethmarks, thick

white coat, heavier on the root. Everything else normal except

constipation and painful arthritis in neck.

All input is most appreciated!

There's lymphatic massage and brushing that can significantly reduce the

swelling. The patient may already have that advice if she has the dx of

lymphedema.

Needles may be contraindicated locally - possibility of provoking cellulitis.

I would strengthen spleen and kidney to transport the water.

Spleen 6, Spleen 9 and Kidney 3 (Kidney 7) as a start.

edema in the foot is usually week kidneys I think. Kidney problems

tend to show up in lower part of body, that is if kidney yang/qi

cannot lift the fluid accumulated in the feet. This may also give heat

signs above, the yin going down and cannot control yang in the upper part

SP 5 and GB 41 are the two basic points for edema on the dorsum pedis

according to the CAM (Beijing) yellow book.

Edema in the legs is called Yin edema (SP/ KD yang xu)

Moxa is indicated at Du 4, UB 23, Ren 4/6.

However, your patient has heat signs in the pulse (sl. rapid) and feels warm

and cold signs in the tongue (paleish, teethmarks, thick white coat)

Is this false heat and true cold?

The tongue tells the truth and the pulse quality can lie in that

situation...

or does she have heat signs in the chest and head

and cold signs below the waist?

That could be a moxa KD 1 situation (very common)

Thank you, Janis. I was hoping that someone out there can give me

some TCM treatment advice, and answer my question as to the prognosis

with acu and herbal. All comments appreciated!
