Guest guest
I've been following this tread with some interest. Yes TCM school is easier than medical school. I have little doubt of that. Our medicine rarely deals with life and death decisions and does not require the same level of training and pressure. I think it is foolish to expect Chinese medical practioners to expect the same level of respect and pay as MD's who work 18 hour shifts knee deep in blood and guts who's slightest mistake can cause serious harm or death. However, Chinese medicine is elegant and extremely effective for some conditions. I have had success where Western medicine has failed completely. What I do is of value, and while not as demanding on me as Western Medicine would be, at the end of the day it is the results in the patients lives that matter. I remember the days when IBM PC users would look down on Macintosh users because they thought the easier to use interface was like a toy and couldn't be considered a serious computer because it wasn't hard like DOS. In the end a harder process does not necessarily provide better results. Christopher Vedeler L.Ac. Oasis Acupuncture http://www.oasisacupuncture.com 9832 N. Hayden Rd. Guest guest
The only MDs that are knee deep in blood and guts are ER docs. Somebody is watching too much TV. Most MDs see a patient for 5 to 10 mins, write a RX and NEXT! Geez, it's efficacy, not schooling that is the discussion. Guest guest
Hi Christopher, I like the verity of your post both in the MD/LAc comparison and the importance of elegant medical style. The DOS/Mac comparison in the long run is a nice one as well. In any case it's hard to beat a good education as a foundation for what your goals are. People are correctly miffed by an MD or DC being an incorrect preparation for the elegance of practice you cite in TCM. As a practicing scientist I'm equally miffed by people educated in TCM (and lacking a science education) in America that attempt to be guided by spokes people from the edge. If you want to see opinions in Western science like the autism/vaccination connection, stay away from the non-science sites. As an example of a reasonable science site, I'd recommend looking at Tara C. Smith's site. She's an assistant professor of etiology and is young enough in her professional development to be addressing topics of interest to newly minted practitioners in TCM. See: http://scienceblogs.com/aetiology/2008/04/clinton_and_obama_parrot_the_v.php You may be amused, offended or relieved ... depending on your own educational and professional development. It's at the very least a reality check. I personally like your own reality check posted below. Your presentation resonates with me.
