Phil,

 

Nice presentation. Endocarditis (and other life threatening conditions) is not

something that needs to be taken on single-handedly. As you point out, it takes

a team. Like Z'ev points out, it takes a mutually respectful team.

Unfortunately it's hard sometimes even for the cardiologist to share turf with

the surgeon, let alone an OMD. Most healthcare systems outside of the U.S. are

in better shape to integrate.

 

I feel lucky to live in the San Francisco area. When faced with a critical care

issue, I can find senior practitioners of many different disciplines willing to

share turf around a single case. However, it usually means that some expenses

are going to be out of pocket. The good part is that such expenses are paid

directly to the caregivers, so the cost is not magnified by institutional

accounting systems.

 

I sense that you participate with many such interfaces of caregiving.
