Guest guest
i was reading about type I diabetes in taber's med dict and noticed that this is can be an autoimmune disorder caused by a virus such as influenza, mumps, rubella that causes the immune system attack on the beta cells. this got me to thinking about using anti viral herbs and tx latent heat in these patients. i'm wondering what your reaction might be to this possible tx strategy? i look forward to hearing your comments on this idea. kath -- Oriental Medicine Experienced, Dedicated, Effective Flying Dragon Liniment: Effective pain relief for muscles & joints Formulated by Kath Bartlett, Traditional Chinese Herbalist Available at Asheville Center for , or web order at: https://www.kamwo.com/shop/product.php?productid=17442 & cat=0 & page=1 Asheville Center For 70 Woodfin Place, Suite West Wing Two Asheville, NC 28801 828.258.2777 kbartlett www.AcupunctureAsheville.com
Guest guest
Kath, One cannot necessarily translate from biomedical ideas into Chinese medical ones. In other words, viruses are not necessarily latent heat, and latent heat doesn't necessarily mean viruses. Latent evils can include latent cold, latent damp, latent damp-heat, or latent dryness. It is very interesting that the latest research indicates viruses or external attacks may trigger diabetes type I, but by the time diabetes develops, the pattern(s) are usually quite complex, requiring a mixture of warm and cold, supplementing and draining medicinals. . As you point out, most 'anti-viral' Chinese herbs are bitter and cold, such as chuan xin lian, but if the patient is yang or qi xu with internal cold, such medicinals can damage the yang qi further. Recent Chinese cases seem to discourage the indiscriminate use of cold bitter medicinals for viral diseases.
