Guest guest
My patient is a 5 year old girl, with dental cavities beginning around age 2. Has healthy diet, mostly natural foods, but not a lot of meat or dairy up until age 4 or so. Has a history of grinding teeth at night. Tongue is pink, with red dots over whole tongue. She has " stomach aches " occasionally, about once a month. Normal growth, good intelligence, and good shen, bright, clear eyes. Good complexion, has lots of energy. The cavities are almost all on the upper teeth. Recently, having pain in upper molar when chewing food. Her parents recently added meat, raw milk and butter to her diet to help rebuild teeth. Occasional bedwetting and urinary incontinence. Difficulty falling asleep. Likes to be awake and active, but not really hyperactive. I'm thinking stomach heat, with maybe some kidney yin deficiency. Maybe Liu Wei di huang wan, with some stomach heat formula, but could use some input, ideas, suggestions? thanks, Heidi
Guest guest
Sounds like classic " bottle mouth " syndrome from child falling asleep with bottle in the mouth. It is not uncommon. There really isn't anything you can do except treat the adult teeth that come in with more care. Grinding of teeth can often be a symptom of parasites. If clearing stomach heat doesn't change the situation I would have parents send a stool sample in to check. (Doctors Data is very good at finding parasites) What symptoms does she have that are Kidney Yin Xu? Usually incontinence is related more to Kidney Qi Deficiency than Ki Yin Xu. The red prickles can be stomach yin deficiency or they can be deficiency from stasis. How is her appetite? I would take a look at the Gentle Warriors line from Kan Herbs for pediatrics. They have some formulas that may be appropriate like Tummy Tamer or Grow and Thrive. Since Lui Wei Di Huang can be such a cloying formula I would hesitate to give it to her. I hope this helps.
