Guest guest
Does anyone know of a good protocol for treating cervical polyps. I have treated nasal polyps with success but cannot find anything on cervical polyps and any main points that are usesd. I know they are damp/phlegm in nature, but not sure to treat as fibroids to a certain extent. Many thanks Hi Joanna, I don't have much experience with cervical polyps though I did treat them successfully once. Since the manifesting symptom for polyps is bleeding, I treat to stop the bleeding using differential diagnosis to determine the cause of the bleeding. So, this worked the one time I used it for polyps and the polyps disappeared. Unfortunately, I think the resources we have in our current text books for how to clearly diagnose and treat bleeding disorders is sorely limited. My teachers had such clear ways of working with bleeding both in terms of diagnosis and treatment of the various phases and degrees of bleeding. If you wrote up your case I would apply for you what I have been trained in. In the mean time, here is a case I translated in which the patient had polyps. It is interesting to note that the practitioner did nothing for polyps in particular but just treated according the the diagnosis: Polyps: Ms Yu age 31 Principle complaint: Irregular menses, often dripping without cease. This past menstruation was still going after 12 days. The blood color is pale with a peculiar smell. Her low back feels sore and sometimes painful. She also experiences palpitations, dizziness, weakness, poor sleep. Often she has vaginal bleeding and post coital bleeding. Previously she went to a municipal hospital and was diagnosed with cervical polyps. Surgery was recommended but she decided to use Traditional Chinese medicine for treatment. Check up: Her tongue moss is thin white and her pulse is slow and wiry. Differential Diagnosis: When there is frequent vaginal bleeding and post-coital bleeding, we can know that there is local uterine pathology as opposed to menstrual pathology. Nonetheless, chronic bleeding does deplete the Qi and Blood and the patient’s condition will linger. A comprehensive analysis of the pulse and pattern showed that the Chong and Ren received damage and were unable to store the blood. The bleeding damaged the Yin. The ancient sage said that sudden bleeding requires supplementation while chron-c dripping requires clearing. Because of the peculiar smell I needed to deal with the retained stasis in the Chong and Ren. Treatment Principle: Dispel stasis generate the new. Nourish Yin and clear heat. Formula Guan Zhong Tan 6 Chen E Jiao 6 (dissolve separately and add 3 gms to each dose) Gui Ban Jiao 8(dissolve separately and add 3 gms to each dose) Lao Zong Tan 10 Hei Sheng Ma 5 Sheng Di Tan 12 Hei Jing Jie 10 Shu Di Tan 12 Hang Bai Shao 10 (stir-fried with 5 gm Chai Hu) Mao Cang Zhu 6 Chuan Huang Bai 6 Hei Shan Zha 6 Chuan Du Zhong 10 Chuan Xu Duan 10 Shu Nu Zhen 12 Second Visit: She took three packages of herbs. The blood had already decreased though there was still a watery secrection with a peculiar smell. The wiry pulse had become peaceful. I added 6 gm of Duan Ci Wei Pi (Hedge Hog pelt calcined) to the orignal formula and gave her three packages. Third Visit: After two bags of the last formula, she felt unwell in her lower abdomen. A soft dark red, thumb-sized lump rotated out of her vagina but without any increased bleeding. There was only a slightly bloody watery discharge. Her mood was tense and keyed up, she felt weak and her sleep and eating were not good. The tissue was sent to the lab to have the pathology analyzed. I advised her to take the third package of herbs and then check again to see if she was recovering. Forth Visit: A week later Ms. Yu came for a check up. The lab results were that the tissue was a polyp with no cancer cells. She had a careful gynecology exam and her uterus and cervix were normal with no new polyps. Her body was still weak so I gave her a formula to regulate her qi and blood combined with herbs to regulate and consolidate. Formula: Hang Bai Shao 10 (stir-fried with 5 gm Chai Hu) Jiu Chao Sheng Shu Di Huang 6 gm each. Chen E Jiao 10(dissolve separately and add 3 gms to each dose) Dang Gui 10 Jiu Chuan Xiong 5 Fen Dan Pi 10 Shu Nu Zhen Zi 12 Zhu Fu Shen 10 Zhu Cun Dong 10 Mei Gui Hua 10 Dai Dai Hua 6 Fifth Visit: After taking four packages of the formula her spirit and body strength improved as did her appetite and sleep. The vaginal bleeding and peculiar smelling discharge had cleared. Her pulse was steady. Her Chong and Ren gradually filled. I enjoined her to continue in order to consolidate the effect. Discussion: This illness belongs to the category of the 5 accumulations, the 6 knottings, the 7 concretions and 8 conglomerations. In terms of Beng Lou, the Zhi Bing Yuan Hou Lun says that when there are polyps this is vacuity and depletion of the Bao Luo. Cold and heat are unregulated and wind evil is contained. The evil Qi multiplies in the Yin. The fighting in the Qi and Blood becomes polyps which are like a mouse breast. As my teacher saw patients for many years, we saw many cases of this illness. The causes of the pathology vary though generally one always wants to dispel stasis and generate the new. Guan Zhong Tan, Lao Zong Tan, Sheng Ma, Jing Jie and Cang Zhu not only stop bleeding and lift, they also dispel stasis and generate the new. The two gelatins have the function of stopping bleeding and regenerating. Huang Bo and Shan Zhi Zi clear heat and drain dampness. Shu and Sheng Di Huang, Dang Gui, Chuan Xiong and Nu Zhen Zi regulate the blood. Ci Wei Pi can treat nocturnal emissions in Men and in women it can treat Bai Dai. Altogether this had the effect of strengthening and consolidating. This case can be used for reference.
